Hi,
I was able to pick up a 4-speed for my 3-on-the-tree conversion. I did not realize that the current bellhousing on my '70 FJ40 would not work on a 4-speed.
So, now it looks like I need a bell housing to put between my F155 and the 4-speed.
I figure there should be tons of them lying around colecting dust with all the conversions etc.
If you have one your are willing to part with it, please drop me a line. I'm assuming all the cluch parts form my 3-speed will transfer.

Thanks for the help --

to go from 3 speed to 4 speed, you need the bellhousing, flywheel and associated bits. the clutch discs are different also

Well, it sounds like I need more than just the bellhousing.

I'm now looking for the flywheel and associated bits, including the clutch disk which I should probably purchase new but it would be nice to have a used one to get it back on the road.

Basically, what I'm needing is everything is between the transmission and the engine including the flywheel for a 4-speed manual setup.

It does not seem like much from the 3-speed will work with the new setup.

Thanks for all the help -- I'm sure there is someone who has changed to an automatic and has the parts sitting around collecting dust. (at least I hope)

I've been running a three speed clutch in my 68 FJ40 with the four speed since the early 90s. You just need the bell housing. The input splines on the three and early four speed are the same. You will need a adapter kit for the transfer case if you plan on using your old one. The drives lines will have to have the lengths changed too since the four speed is 3 1/2" longer. It wiil fit in front of the crossmember behind the transfer case but you will not be able to install it without pulling the engine or dropping the back of the engine down.

I have an old flywheel from a 77. It will need to be resurfaced. I am in Tulsa - fairly close to Enid. You can have it if you want it.

. My son recently bought an old fj40 with a 4 speed in it and no motor. He bought a motor w/ a 3 speed transmission and bell housing, clutch, fly wheel. He's 17 and not that experienced and is having trouble getting everything to work. Is it easier for him to take out the 4 speed and go with the 3 speed? Will the transfer case match? We live in Helena, but I work out of state and can't help much. Would appreciate any information.

Thanks, R. Erickson

all you should need is the bellhousing you can use all the 3 speed stuff if its good even the clutch fork can stay on the same side .its a bolt in operation the drive shafts can be done by using the 4 speed d shafts and the 3 speed yolks and put the drive shafts in backwards 'slip joint tworads the axle .many vehicles come from the factory this way

I have a bell housing, clutch etc in Tulsa. PM me if interested and we can discuss.

I did not realize on my phone that this was a 10 year old thread.
