Looking for some ideas. We go thru lots of 1/4" diameter mild steel rod/wire in the welding class, the instructor has them making several projects with it. I need a better option for cutting the stuff that is quick, accurate, easy, and safe. I bought one of these:

Klutch Plate Shear — 12in. Blade Length | Metal Shears| Northern Tool + Equipment

It's actually a nice shear for cutting up to 1/4" plate and bar stock. It has that hole in the jaw above the cutter shear specifically for cutting round rod, but it turns out it's terrible for our application. You can't see where the cut is actually going to be, plus it badly deforms the rod when you cut it, it ends up with a bent end and a weird angle on it. Very crude.

So for now we're back to using bolt cutters, which is not a good solution. It's unstable and not safe, and really slow.

Any better options out there? So far my Googling hasn't turned up anything better.

some rebar cutters I saw seemed to work well...

how about a (portable) band saw? that will make quick work of 1/4"

I actually have a Porta-Band here, I'll give that a try. I also have a large horizontal bandsaw, but it was too cumbersome, one of the students actually somehow managed to ruin a blade in it.

Nope, it's not fully setup yet, but soon.
