hum, after reading i didnt realize the 6-speed is full time 4wd... i dunno about that now

data point....I have run in 4WL for DAYS in my 80 with no issues. Cool as a cucumber.

If you are going to do any serious rock or ledge work, you'll be best off with an auto, unless you can get the crawl ratio to at least 60:1.

I had 62:1 on my 40 and there were rocks and ledges that made me wish I had 100:1.

I generally prefer a manual, but a manual with poor gearing in difficult terrain is kinda like sandpaper on sunburn.

whats the crawl ratio on the auto as opposed to the manual, anyone have the spec sheet in PDF form?

Not handy, but keep in mind that it will only matter in engine breaking scenarios (downhill). Up and over rocks the auto is a dream compared to an ungeared stick.

Great point made about gearing in stick. The lower the gearing the more it can be of use. Of course, that almost proves the point since you can get the same effect by using an auto (the only issue is the downhill engine breaking, which you will get, just not enough unless you lock up the torque manually).

I'm new here and my family and I are dedicated toyota heads. I guess the thought of us getting the FJC was inevitable. My parents immediately fell in love with it because it resembled their parents FJ40 in the philippines, we currently own a FJ80 and couldnt be any happier with it, first owners and it hasnt failed us yet.

I'm a gear head and have done amateur import drag racing (starting out with an Integra and recently a 300zx turbo) so im great with clutch control. I mud my 67 Bronco but it sure is hard with 32s and my straight-6 (w/ three on the tree might i add) it gets around but its so pitiful.

At the moment my project is a S2000 powered 1987 corolla gt-s coupe, haha meaning that I'm driving my girlfriends car around. My family and I have been watching/waiting for the FJC to come around and its finally here, I've been waiting for my local dealership to get a 6spd with locker, but i've read a few articles where they say the auto is better for crawling. im fixed on the 6spd because i need to move while i drive, and it doesnt look like it could be that hard wheeling stickshift.

Me too. Three days, all day.

Plus they tested the thing through the rubicon, and it held up.

i sucked it up and bought an auto voodoo... oh man i put it toe to toe with my parents 80... these ginormous bumpers make it extra long! nearly the same length as the fj80!
COngrats and don't worry you can always get rid of those plastic bumpers later.

good choice on the color and going with an auto. you won't regret that when you're on the trail. you need a REALLY low crawl ratio for a manual when you're a NOOB at wheeling like you said you were.

now, where's the obligatory pics required of all FJ NOOB's???

If you have more fun driving a M/T, get one and learn to wheel it. If you end up not liking the auto, you will regret it.

Both of my trucks are M/T and I wouldn't have it any other way. I get too bored driving autos.

does the auto 4x4 offer a CDL? I know the 4x4 manaul version has it.

6-Speed.

I'm as big a noob as it gets. I haven't gone off-road with my FJC yet, but I sure was glad to have the auto transmission this morning when I was driving through a foot plus of snow on the way to work. The Cruiser handled everything beautifully.
