i bought a warn 9500xp last year and used it about 2-3 diff occasions maybe 12 differnet pulls. well about a month before the warranty went out i tried to use it and it didnt pull. like the brushes in the motor were trashed or the drum was locked/jammed. so i had a Warn repair shop look at it and they said that my "water prrof" winch was full of mud. so they cleaned it out and then "sealed" it up better this time.

well i got it back on and did a test in my yard and it seemed to pull ok but it was kinda noisey.. well this last trip i just went on it left me stranded.

the winch would hardly pull it self in then eventually it just didnt move at all. the 2 yellow tops i have checkd out ok. one was like 1012 ca and one was 875 ca. also i have the solenoids mounted in the passengers floorboard. they click fine.
im pretty disapointed that my water prrof winch is full of mud, that is all we have around here in florida for the most part and its hard to avoid it in creek crossing etc.
i bought this winch to have the least chance of failure and it still happened.
said thing is that a HARBOR FREIGHT winch pulled me out. with a block ofcourse.

my question is without spending money with these yahoos again is there anyhting i can do to the winch.. brushes etc? i mean i need to learn the workings of this thing if it does this on the trails again.

thanks alot guys

No real help but I'd suggest calling and explaining they didn't repair it correctly and you're expecting to have it fixed under warranty.

you think they will do that? i mean it was almost out of warranty then and that was in april.
for all they know i have been using it 24-7 and it worked fine. ehhhh i guess ill try that. same thing our vendor said. thanks

Call Warn Customer Service 1 800 543 9276

The guys seem to be really interested in what the equipment is doing, (or not).

Give em a call see what the factory guys say..

call warn first
if that fails, take it apart yourself, clean it up, replace the replaceable parts (bearings, brushes, etc)
in the end, it is just a big electric motor and some gears... not rocket science.
if you hare having problems with water intrusion, try sealing it up with silicone sealant and/or grease
I just tore my superwinch apart (again) to clean it out (again) and went nuts with the silicone in an attempt to keep it from flooding (again).
If it doesn't work, my next move will be to try to fit O-rings to all the parts where there are seams. I don't think it can be sealed perfectly, but at least I can slow down the flooding

Call Warn 800/543-9276 as mentioned above - I had real good luck with Augie (x3205). They are more than willing to help you out. Great service. Worse comes to worst, you can ship them the winch and they will rebuild it for about $60 plus shipping.

Good luck.

well i just talked to todd at warn and he was very helpful.
seems that i didnt read the small print when installing the winch.
since i mounted it to a ARB bumper there are a few steps you need to do to aid in drainage.
as it is he suspects that the factory sealed hole is now actually at the 6 oclock spot
and the motor would have to be about half full to leak out another hole. wow seems pretty simple.
ill check it out tonite.

he said check that out and if its the case he would get me another motor no problem. too good.
thanks guys.

update
well i got the motor in and installed it .... everything works great.
so i guess let this be a lesson when installing a warn winch onto a ARB bumper. gotta redo the drains. hope this saves someone some time.
thanks for your guys input.

Can you give me more details on what needs to be done to the drains? I have a Warn M12,000 mounted to the ARB winch bumper on my 1996 FZJ80. I mounted it in mid/late 2000 and have used it only a few times (2-3 occassions, with maybe a dozen pulls).

On the last occassion, I noticed it was rather loud and rather hard to free spool the line out. I thought maybe I needed to lube something, but I'm wondering now about the mounting and drain holes.

I guess I'll start searching for this on the web.

Hmmmm--Never had this as an issue on my winch (M12000) on an ARB. The motor doesn't touch the ARB in any way, nor does the ARB prevent drainage?????

Sounds fishy to me. Maybe the 9500 is different. Your experience from Warn is typical of their customer service, though. It is excellent. I called several times about my 8274 and they helped me get it resolved, even sending some free parts for a 17 year old winch!

It is the mounting position. The 9500 is originally setup to be mounted feet down. On the ARBs the winch has to be spun 90* to mount feet forward. There is a small drain hole between the motor and the winch case. Usually you also spin the motor to get the terminal connection back at the top, so the silicon/sealant is re-done at this point with the drain hole at the bottom.

mmm, should check mine too. I didn't reclock it.
of course, not much mud in Calif, plus I keep it covered...

Makes sense now. Interesting as I know a couple of "clocked" M8000s on bullbars.

hmmm ill have to go check my WARN RC9000 just mounted it 2 months ago feet out like said above !
