I finally wrapped up my 8274 rebuild.

Thanks to the many ONSC guys that helped along the way but mainly diggity (Brad) who never seemed to tire of my questions.

HERE is the thread I posted on the Winching and Recovery forum at the request of a few guys. I hope some of you will benefit from it.

Sweet man! Awesome finished product!
I'll wisecrack on your spooling on this thread - ha!

Tension in the line is key!
A very slight slope will do the trick - I typically go behind my office and pull the whole cable and respool.
I typically bring some oil & rags to soak the line to keep her pretty.
I've even done it in my driveway w some clever use of the snatch block!

Mine is waiting in someone else's basement/garage/truck for the same treatment!:D

David that is awesome! Very well done, and the details will surely help others!

Cirbo gave me the same advice and I tried it but the 8274 is just so fast, I had a hard time making it look good while operating the remote. :doh:I expect I'll get used to it but I've got to find a better spot than here by my house. A 150' with a slight incline and a tree to hook to are hard to find around here so I used the snatchblock to get away with half the distance.:hhmm:

Thanks for the complements guys. I didn't provide near the details flintknapper and Awl_TEQ did as I didn't want to be redundant and could never have explained it as well. Hope others will enjoy having all those links in one place.

Brian, suggest you create a Google Alert to help you find one on Craigslist. They appear from time to time (several after I got mine) and can go quickly.

Yeah, I got my 8274-50 in EXCELLENT condition off CL. It had about 6 pulls on it (guy used it on a farm truck only) and I picked it up and a huge Warn Bronco bumper for $500. Sold the bumper for a buck fiddy so I wound up w/ $350 in 'er. One of my better scores :)

David - turned out great, happy to help, Bumper looks awesome too :)

I am in the process of rebuilding an 8274.

Any advice on getting the main shaft (external brake shaft) out of the housing of bottom half. I cannot get it out, not sure what to do. TIA

Remove the snap ring and the brake discs from the outside. Some bearings will likely fall out. Then look inside the housing. There is a lock plate that must be lifted up to allow the brake shaft to be pushed out from the inside of the housing. A long, stout screwdriver is all you should need to push it out. Once the brake shaft is out you can remove the lock plate altogether.

Here's a vid I found. May be it will help.
