Nothing fancy here, installed an Icom VHF radio in my truck today. Tucked under my cd player nicely, seems to work fine without any interference. I just need to make up a filler piece to cover the gap on the right-hand side now.

Nice install. What about the power source setup?

Nice to see that as I'm about to do one myself. Just curious, what was the determining factor to purchase this radio? I'm taking the course for Ham but haven't chosen the radio yet.

Thanks guys. I ran the power directly from the battery, with the inline fuse provided. Grounded it to the fender, near the antenna, after scraping off the paint. As far as why I went with this one, I did not necessarily want to go for my Ham licence, and I am in Kamloops right now, and the local dealer sells Icom. They were able to program in some frequencies for the Chilcotin area where our family has a cabin, so that I can be in contact out there when exploring some of the logging roads.

Which level are you heading for? Tech or General? Extra?
Radio will depend on needs. A basic 2 meter unit maybe all you require.

Tech,

It allows me access to more permissions but I'm not interested in having a tower in my yard so I think a 2M will be fine. You never know though, I might want to even do morse. Something cool about that.

Safety is my main concern. I'm often out of cell phone range.

Cheers,

John

Rambush - gofast is Canadian, our licensing structure is a little different up here. As long as you pass a 100 question exam with 80% or better you have full HF privileges up to 200W. 70% gets you above 30MHz, but no HF.

John, as long as you get 80% you'll have all the access and privileges you'll need. You might not want HF now, but in a while... :D
