There are seemingly endless discussions about what the "best" tires are, or which are better in any number of ways, so I figured why not muddy the water even further.

I bought my '05 Cruiser last year from an old buddy of mine. It came with 275/70/18 GY Duratracs on it, which by his guess had about 25-30k of mixed use on them. He commuted on them, but also had some fun trips to Moab, Zion, out west, as well as Big Bend etc (yes, I know, my Cruiser is more well traveled than me). He noted that they had gotten much noisier over time, and were vibrating at an annoying frequency as well. Anyway, he offered to put new tires on it before he sold it to me (at my cost, of course) but because he just bought them in 2015, and because I thought I'd get some more use out of them and then buy new ones going into winter I told him to hold off.

Fast forward to this year and every time I drove it, the vibrations seemed to get worse, I Road Force balanced them, tried all different pressures, cross rotated them but no dice. I chalked it up to my buddy going a little too long between rotations and them developing a "chop" wear pattern, which apparently is a serious problem on these tires. Anyway, It got to the point that at 60-70mph (indicated) the whole cruiser was shaking so much (wheel, seat, everything) that I was legitimately afraid that I would vibrate something important loose, so I said screw it and committed to buying new tires. It wasn't until recently that I actually examined the tires more closely.

On at least one of the tires the tread appeared to actually be separating from the sidewall Dropbox - tire sidewall.jpg
Whether it was a new problem, or I hadn't noticed it when I was airing up and down etc I don't know.

Thankfully nothing catastrophic happened. But as much as I love the concept of a siped A/T M/T hybrid, liked their looks and was pleased with the snow performance of them it's pretty hard to recommend these to other people.

For what it's worth, my Cruiser rides awesome on the KO2's that I ended up with, and is back to being an absolute pleasure to drive.

Your buddy destroyed those tires somehow. I'm on my second set of Duratrac's on my heavier Dodge/Cummins and like them a lot. 60 psi and 5000k rotations got me 55k miles out of my first set. Contrast that with Toyo AT's and BFG AT's that were worn out by 35k.
Any tire with larger tread blocks will get noisier over time, its unavoidable per my 25 years of off road tire experience. Any tire with larger tread blocks will begin to cup and get "choppy" if run on a truck that's out of alignment, has crappy shocks or is not rotated often enough.

Hi all,

4Beast, what land rating were those Goodyear Duratrac tires?

Baldilocks, I have to assume that you are running "E" rated GY Duratracs?

No. 285/70R17 Duratrac's are D rated.

They were E rated, if that's what you were asking.

This is kind of like doing a review on a used razor and saying you didn't enjoy the experience and cant recommend that brand. If those tires had 30+k miles on them when you got it, I'd say don't bother with a review because you don't have a good base to go on.

Well I can tell you from my experience with a brand new pair. I had them on my ride less than 10 months on my F150. Drove 15,000 miles on them and hated them. I was living in VT with my family in VA so I went back and forth a lot.
On road for the first 5000 miles they were fine. then they started to howl and howl and howl.
I though it was bad and when pulling in to a hotel, one of the patrons even mentioned it.

Then it was the 3 punctures. Not in between the lugs like you would think in the low spots but right in the lugs them selves (yes the screws/ nails were huge). I have had maybe 7 punctured tires over 32 years of driving and never 2 on the same vehicle.
Off road I tore the sidewall 2 times on 2 tires. Never tore a sidewall before.
On road after letting my truck sit for 24 hours they had flat spots (have them with my silent armors as well) and it pisses me off. Again this is new to me.
In the rain and snow I will say they were awesome, but that is all I will give them.
I have had an LR3 which is damn close to the 150 for weight (I believe it weighed more) and never had these issues. Also had a F350 SCrew with is a beast and never had these issues.

I a that 1% that will never buy Duratracs nor will I ever recommend them

Well, while I see your point, in some ways it is more relevant than writing a review of new tires, which are pretty much all great. I didn't drive the tires for long, but I know the PO and where he went and the tires definitely deteriorated in the time that I had them. All reviews are basically n of 1 studies so they should be taken with a grain of salt, I just thought people should know what one experience of Duratracs after 25k miles was. That kind of tread delamination isn't normal wear. Forewarned is forearmed.

And there is always a bad apple in every bunch.
