I wanted some extra dry storage on my roof so I installed a Pelican case on my ARB 49"x87 roof rack. Figured I'd share my install with y'all since when I searched I couldn't find too many posts out there

I ended up getting the Pelican IM3200 case. It's outer dimensions are 47.2"x16.5x6.7 and the useable interior is 44.00"x14.00x6.00 - this case has latches on the sides, which I had to cut off, but I wanted the extra depth and length over the Pelican 1720 which doesn't have side latches. Overall I wanted a lower profile box that didn't ride too high.

I used 4 #308 U-Bolts for 3/4" pipe that were zinc coated. I wrapped the U-Bolt in electrical tape to provide a surface for where it meets the cross bar on the roof rack. Not sure if it will hold up. If you're getting fancy you could get some stainless U-Bolts and dip them in liquid plastic? On top, inside the case, I used big washers and the plate that came with the U-Bolts on top. Underneath the case I used another 'top plate' and trimmed the excess bolt length.

I lined up the case on roof where I wanted it to sit then put 'whiteout' on the ends up the U-Bolt, which left marks on the bottom of the case where I needed to drill holes. Worked out well!

Here are some pics:

I like the low profile and quality of the case. What can you fit in the case that you own and carry?

I'll carry my clothes, dry food, recovery strap and tools that are rolled up. I may even make a pouch for my snatch block. Anything that won't make too much rattling noise.

The case has 6" of storage space, seems short at first but it's a good trade off

Instead of the tape on the U bolts try using some rubber heat shrink tubing. Slides right on and fits nice and snug after being heated up. Its cheap and you can get it at Lowes or HD and it holds up a lot better than the tape.

sweet set up

looks pretty good.. i have to get a rack for mine first but i like the look for sure.. good stuff:cheers:

I would recommend nylock nuts or adding some Loctite.

That is one shinny cruiser.

sweet truck! but then i'm partial to the freeborn red :D

Great looking storage idea. I've got the same rack on my 60. Question, about your attachment point for tools. I am looking for a place to put my shovel, axe and hi-lift. What did you use?

Some silly expensive but well made ones from FourTreks. You'll need the ARB 1" for the top tube where I have my shovel and axe mounted (axe wasn't mounted in the photo)

I was just wondering if a IM3220 would fit within the interior dimension of the 49" wide ARB rack and google found your post (I had MUD open in another tab LOL.)

You think if I go with the IM3220 which is 2.5" tall that the side latches would clear the side bar on the rack?

How is wind noise/issues with the box athwartships at the front of the rack?
