My New M416 Lid

Here are some pics of my new lid I had made. Modeled after the adventure trailer but one piece. It is 1/8th thick aluminum. I will post more pics as I get ready to mount it to the trailer.

Was it hard to find someone to make the bend on the end pieces? I was thinking the same thing to minimize the length of weld. I'm having trouble finding someone to make that type of bend. Apparently they need some type of special break.

are there any stiffening ribs or cross bracing under the lid?

OK,here are more pics.
As of now there are no ribs on the underside -YET ! I plan on using 1'' x3''x 1/8'' wall on the underside attaching it with an ureathane caulk. Once I get a RTT, I will know where to place the stiffeners.

Here is the template I drew up so my sheet metal guy didn't have to think too much. Total height measures 6''. I also weighed it tonight and came in at a staggering 53 LB's

As for hinges and latches, I have some 4-1/2'' x4-1/2'' Heavy Duty SS commercial door hinges I got off a job years ago. The latches are something I found at a auto swapmeet in Portland. They are a cam-lock design. I will also use the same rectangle tube to space out the hinges and latches on the tub so they flush out to the lid.

Couple more of the latches. I still need to locate a good foam weatherstrip to attach to the 1'' wide flange on the bottom edge of the lid to provide a good seal when it is closed. Also need to brain storm a clever locking system.

As far as the sheet metal guy, I work in commercial construction and asked the SM foreman if he could get me the aluminum sheets. His shop provided a price and he offered to do it for a minimal fee. It was a one time deal. He had a buddy TIG weld the corners for me even though I just set up my MIG to weld aluminum. I knew it would look better TIG'd. I had them get 60''x 96'' sheets so there was no seams down the length of it. It actually did require an offset die to get the ends bent up to 90 Degrees. All in all, like the way it turned out. I will post more pics once I get it mounted up.

what grade aluminum did you use? 6061, 3003?

Its actually 5052. I hav'nt made any progress since my last post. I've been too busy.
