I bought this about 2 weeks ago. It has a rough hand done paint job on it. It is supposed to have a rebuilt engine about 1 1/2 years about and it sat for most of that time till now. It has some rust on the front doors and the rear tailgate. But here is a picture of the frame towards the rear of the vehicle, please tell me what you think. I am not familiar on how to handle rust due I am from out west and now I am in georgia. I am also thinking on redoing the paint job. Any ideas that result in "cheap". Thanks

I would start by replacing the frame. Find one cheap here on mud and sandblast it then powdercoat it. Then gradually work your way up when the dough (or woman) allows. My 0.02

The view of the frame rust did not look that bad to me. Do you have places where you have deep rust or can stick a screwdriver through?

Looks like pretty dry surface rust. We really need pictures of the inner C channel part of the rear frame.

What did you pay for it? The rust doesn't look that deep at all. How bad is the shock mounting cross member?

Paint is all about prep. With a "hand done" paint job, you need to start now if you want to paint in the next couple of years! Gawdamighty!

This landcruiser is pretty solid. The front part of the frame does not even look like that. It is still black. But I have tapped on this part and it sounds solid. Since I think it is surface rust how long does it take for the rust to turn into horrible unfixable rust? Oh I paid $3400 for this cruiser. Boy My wife is not quite to happy about it. I was setting aside $2600 but I found this and whammmm... The lady I got it from wanted $4000 but She liked me and she did not really want to sell to a studio from hollywood who was going to pay the 4 grand for it. Plus it does not have a title but that is no problem here in Georgia due to 1986 and older don't need one. But I can get one in my home state of Idaho, To easy. But I will submit some pics of the doors to see if I can fix them or should replace the entire doors.

frame looks better than mine ....but then again mine is oiled well ........

Well, Today I got under the rig and took my finish sander with #80 grit paper and tried it on an area of the frame. It is just surface rust so far. At least were I sanded it was just surface rust. I sprayed it with primer so It would stop the rust in that area for now. Now how hard is it to just raise the body from the frame a few inches to get a sand blaster in there. Could that be done? And if that could be done what do I use on the frame if I can get the rust off of it. I don't want it to rust for a very long time. I want it to last cause I want to take it to montana when I am done with the army in 2012. Thanks

get a good wire brush for a airgrinder and go to town

Try putting a hole in it with a screwdriver, sanding isn't going to tell you too much. The frame looks ok to me but looks can be decieving.

I have heared the problems with these frames, was from lack of large enough drainage holes, so they do rust from the inside sometimes. tap on it and listen for a solid ping, if you get a dull thud like there is debris in there, you may want to look at a new frame. Seems to be a lot south of the border, The Canadian border that is.

Good luck with the new rig!!
