Some people find it hard to find one 70 series, particularly in North America, down here in Aus there are a few about and now i've got TWO!!

1985 FJ73 had for about 3 or so years great rig, bit dented up but unstoppable.

And the new addition is a very schmick 1986 BJ74, I want to do some longer trips so the fuel economy boost is very welcome. So far have done ~620km to just over 3/4 tank of diesel.

You did it!!!
Awesome 74 there Hulsty, one Q.
What size tank do you have?
She looks real tidy mate.

Yup! The mods will slowy happen, first is a pyro, major service and swap all my good stuff over to the silver one.

90L tank in it, just standard. I'll fill it right up again soon and see exactly how much fuel I used. Was sitting on 100-110 for the whole 620km just about. Rev's abit, 33''s should bring them down.

Cool,

Is it an Aussie or import? Mines only got a 60lt tank. So I need an aux before
any major expo's. How many's k's on the od? Looks like it hasn't been messed
with (modded) to much which is good.

I might get a long range tank for mine soon if your interested in the 90L tank?

Aussie one, 12V its pretty much stock, still has standard toyota radio and cassette deck! 310,000km on the odo, motor has had a new head, bearings, pistons and rings fitted though after a drink of petrol. Small amount of rust, gearbox needs some attention though as it pops out of 5th gear for some reason when lifting off the accelerator.

Hey that all sounds good.
I'm looking at a 4WD Systems 155lt long range tank.
There about 7-800 bucks. I havent fully looked into it
yet, do you know of anything cheaper? When I do the
top end and westcoast I dont want to run out of fuel.

Is that the Seymour pub in your pics? Looks familiar but
I have seen a few pubs in my time!!!

Sweet , you have a choice diesel or gas !

looks very tidy hulsty. Is the plan to eventually swap all the good gear into the silver one? Then whats to happen to the red one? Or are you keeping the red one for harder tracks only. The 13BT should turn them 35s a bit easier in the thick stuff, you will love it on the sand!

Hello,

You got yourself a nice rig. It seems the PO took care of it.

Keep us posted with the mods.

Nice find Hulsty. Is the body as good as it looks in the pics.
Im also curious About the pub:D

Nice mate looks mint as in the sivler colour
You know now that your red rocket will be de rego'd and turned into a comp truck

boogie man have you ever run your tank nearly dry im keen to find out out a 60ltr tank

Are you sure? Ive never heard of that before.

Once it get to the E for empty I fill her up. The most Ive ever put in her is 62 liters or so. I thought the tank was about 66 liters. Are there dangers with running the cruiser dry to find out how much the tank holds? A dry injector pump doesn't appeal to me as the diesel lubricates it I'm told.

The pub is at Sea Lake, stopped then on the Melbourne-Mildura trip for the car.

The Red Barron wont be turned into a crazy off road rig. Stipping all the good bits off onto the silver bullit clean it up and sell it off.

Rosco,

Body is in pretty good nick, its been painted and some rust repairs done. Windscreen surround is solid except for one 5mm hole. 20c piece sized hole in drivers sill. Firewall has some surface rust under the insulating matting behind the turbo. Paint has blistered and fell off. Need to figure out how to get the matting off and treat the area. Also there is some minor surface rust along the seam of the firewall and plenum. Gotta figure out the best way for the repairs, I need to removre the seam sealer and treat it all. Everywhere else looks solid.

Whats the best stuff to pour into EVERYWHERE to stop any hidden rust and prevent further rust?

I use that stuff that turns black,I can have a look in the shed tomorrow but you might know what I mean.
My 75 has a few spots in that seam and so far it has kept the rust at bay.
On my 73 series I rubbed oil into some surface rust on the seam when it 1st appeared 4-5 years ago and it hasnt gotten any worse

Hello,

Grease works great for me. It needs to be reapplied periodically but stops rust. I clean the rust with WD-40 before applying grease. Hope this helps.

Kind of sad to know the Red Barron is going. It has been a good rig so far, from your posts. Any chance to keep it for "selected," so to speak, trails?

The Barron is a great rig and performs REALLY REALLY well offroad, only reason i'm getting rid of it is the fuel range. I want to do some long trips to the outback etc and with a petrol/gas engine I just cant get good range from the tanks. With the diesel i'm looking at getting DOUBLE the range.

Mine will go a long way past E,at least another 120klms.
Once you run out,the engine stops preventing damage. I doubt the fuel pump is ever entirely empty,if you have ever removed one, it needs to be tipped upside down to get it all out.
It maybe different for D4D pumps.
The tank is listed as a 90 litre but its more like mid 80s.
If you really want to know there is a drain plug under the bash plate on the tank.
Empty out and refill to full, might as well give it a flush while your there.
You wont have to bleed the system that way;)
