Thought I could eek out a few more weeks especially since it only failed in mornings and never after had started once. Well it started fine this morning but after short drive to grocery store it won't start now. Let it sit for 4 hours but still won't start. Letting it sit over night before towing tomorrow. But before I spend ~$100 to tow wondering if there is a trick to start one more time. I read that slamming hood might work but it didn't.

Any suggestions other than pointing out I should have repaired sooner thus avoiding the tow?

Just replace it in the lot, save the tow.

Replacing the starter on the 2UZ for most folks is not a parking lot repair job. Removing the intake plenum is not something i wanna do in a hot parking lot.

On the other series trucks, where you can actually see the starter, tapping on them with a hammer sometimes bumps the contacts around enough that you can get the truck to start. With the hidden starter on the 100, there's no good way to do that.

If you picture the "v" of the motor, it's in that valley at the back end by the tranny. It's under all the intake stuff. It's a great use of wasted space by Toyota, but totally stupid as far as servicing goes.

Well, tried unsuccessfully to start this morning so off she went. Consolation prize was that I forgot I had free towing on my insurance policy.

Buying a rebuilt Denso and taking it to a local re-build shop to see if there is anything that can be done to improve it's long-term reliability.

This is the second time she has stranded me, both times at this same grocery store - bad karma there. The last time was the broken ignition switch thing.

She was talking to you but you weren't listening.

I get accused of the same thing by my wife.

Wholesale automatics has a torque converter lockup kit. When used with their extreme valve body can lock up first gear on demand. I wonder if this would allow a push (compression) start.

If you can lock the TQ a roll start is possible. I have yet to try with the 100 but last time I read some autos can be roll started, whereas some require 50MPH. It's possible, just have to find the speed. And time to purposely kill my battery...

I listened but told her to cowgirl up and go a bit longer. In the end, she won.

Are you having a remote located solenoid installed OR a motor direct jump lead?
Those are the two likely ways to avoid another starter R&R OR stranding respectfully.
