hoo boy. Would that damage the bearings?
I’d say it’s a testament to just how much abuse/neglect our front wheel bearings can take. It’s really amazing. I think most if us on this board(including myself) go a little overboard with maintenance.

And I’m sure without a doubt the bearings need replacing, but not a big deal really, because you would have most likely been replacing them anyways. I know I would have.

Start saving in order to restore this 100 series back to functional.

Look for:
Front diff used - $600-1000
2 CVs - obviously you're probably only be able to afford non OEM ones if $3500 was the budget for a 4x4. Amazon has them for $65 a side or Detroit Axle (don't recommend at all) has them for $75 per - $150
New bearings and inner and outer seals: $200-250
Front Drive shaft - $400
Optional - baseline all at once - Another $500-1000

So about $1500 - $2k to fix the front end bluster.

I don't think you got either a bad deal, or a good deal. Terrible deal if you don't wrench on your own vehicle because garage labour rates will rape you. See this as a learning experience that you got fisted without a diff.

I would have bought it for $4500, put $5000 in it and been grinning the whole time.

👸 would be squeezing my 🥜 very hard!

I think it was already swapped with a OME kit. Parts car might not be a bad idea, if there is room to store and disassemble.

OP has an XJ so I assume he does some work. I hope so, lol
Yeah parts car might be a good investment. Just do not have the space right now. AHC still works well. But I am not willing to say it is great. This is also the 100 I have driven so I don’t have much to compare it to.

Isn't the outer CV still in place? It looks like it from the picture. If that is what I am seeing, your bearings aren't being exposed to water. You could go on driving it that way while you collect parts. Try to get the PO to return the drive shaft. Don't expect the drive axles to be any good. I guess the Amazon choice might work ok. Then you are only short the differential. It's not that impossible! Maybe a parts rig isn't needed.

No, the whole shaft is gone, you can see daylight through the hub.

I'd hit up @arcteryx

If you're looking to get it all straightened out in a shop give Land Cruiser Specialist in Austin a call. Those guys are big cruiser heads and know what they are doing and do it fair. If I'm remembering right from when I was out there a couple weeks ago Shawn made it sounds like he knew of a full front end drivetrain that may be available (or coming soon).

Yes! I talked with Shawn over the phone. Extremely helpful. I think I am going to take it down there soon.

You can't go wrong with those guys. Edwin and crew are the best.

No front drive shaft probably means better MPG.
Maybe you'll get 19-20 MPG on highway.

I'd sell it to the guy that offered $2,500 and cut my losses and headaches. It's going to have engine and transmission problems next due to lack of maintenance. Looks like a lot of oil leakage. That rig is all played out. Nothing left for you to use.

If I were you, I'd hang on to it and use it. I wouldn't sell it cheap just to get rid of it. It looks pretty good. You got it for a no loose price and if it breaks down, and you don't want to fix it, sell it cheap then.
