Hello all. Newbie here. I just purchased my first Land Cruiser, an 87 FJ60 from a friend of mine for 2K. It has 131,000 original miles and runs pretty good. It was de-smogged by my friend, but is all original besides that and the full stainless magnaflow exhaust. It has the Beige Metallic paint (code 4E8) but also has some gray graphics down the side that are supposedly factory. I have never seen one like this.

It has some rust here and there as it was a midwest truck. The frame has some scale and the body has some spots but the previous owner used POR 15 on most of them. The passenger rear tire is a spare, and I have the original chrome wheel, I just need to get a good tire for it. The interior is in excellent conditon and overall the truck is in good shape. I have an original chrome rear bumper coming from forum member freds40, as it has a bent up, painted black bumper on it currently.

Here are some pics of the truck. The oil spots on the ground are from a neighbors car. Since it has been de-smogged, it currently runs best when the choke is pulled out two clicks, and you have to drive it like that. Any input or advice? I can take pics of the motor if need be. Thanks for lookin!

nice LC looks clean

What up with the mirrors,I like those,I got big bulky ones

Thanks for the compliment!

Yeah, not sure about the mirrors. I have seen pics of both types, but the larger ones might have been an option?

Yeah, you don't want those big bulky ones...too much air drag, kills your mileage. Will trade you for a pair of the little ones. Send me a PM

:D You beat me to it..... ;)

Two-tone? Wicked.

Do later model 60's have different center consoles? My 83 does not look like that one.

His center console looks like my 88 FJ62 one. Not sure of the differences b/w your 60.

Nice truck. I dig the stripes and the factory roof rack. Post up as you begin to go through it.

Since you did ask for advice.... Where are you located? First thing I would do is knock that scale off the frame and get some oil on there, and put a fresh coat on every year. Start with the foundation and move up. I've been working out small kinks (some really small) for two years now on mine: power steering pump, tie rod ends, rebuild front axle, etc.. When I finally start putting some money into lift, bumper, gears, locker, winch, I shouldn't have to stop and fix something I could have done in the first year.

Just my $0.02.

"Runs best with 2 clicks of choke" = intake manifold leak. Warm it up & spray around the base of the IM with carb cleaner. If the idle picks up, you've found the leak.

Be careful not to overdo the carb cleaner - there are cases of engine fires started this way.

2X what Tinker is saying. If you need to run it with the choke pulled, something ain't right and it is not the desmog (at least a proper desmog). The good news is that you will learn a lot chasing the problem and that people on this board can help.
Also, 2X on Forest Dan's comments on fixing the basics before jumping into the bling. You have got a reasonably low mile rig, but it still has a lot of mile on it. Welcome to the board!

Thanks for the input. Are you saying use motor oil on the frame? Do you have any input on POR 15? I really just want to stop the rust in it's tracks.

Yeah, I am going to start going through the underside and the motor soon to see what it needs. I know that the rear shock mount tube is broken off at the frame on both sides, so I have a custom replacement coming for that from Solid Rock Offroad that I am going to weld in. The motor might have a few vacuum leaks as well because the vacuum advance on the distributor is not hooked to anything. It also has an exhaust leak at the manifold gasket, which is gonna be a pain in the butt. Everything else seems relatively solid. The tranny does grind a little going into reverse though. Not sure if this is common place or not.

Thanks again for the info guys. Keep it coming!

looks like my 87

Thanks! Just curious is all...

Looks like a great canvas to start with lefthandblack. Enjoy the addiction. There is no other.

Motor oil would work, but used motor oil has acids in it that might actually promote rust. Or so I hear.

There are several types of rust inhibitors out there, Fluid Film (what I used with good results), LPS 3, some 3M stuff, etc. Check out this discussion from last December:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-...-vs-fluid-film-frame.html?highlight=frame+oil

Bonus with the Fluid Film: it's lanolin based, not petroleum. No worries about dripping into the creeks, and I've been using it on my work boots.

POR15 gets great reviews, but it sounds like if you really want to do it right, you need to take everything off the frame and really clean it up. Or do all that cleaning with the body on, which seems nearly impossible.

Thanks for the info. I might try that and POR15 the places that I can access.
