So I picked up a bone stock '96 with factory lockers and 85k on it. I was pretty excited when I saw how clean it was and how good the thing sounded (slight whine and all) and the owner had great records from the day he bought it as a certified used vehicle 5 years ago.

Thought I might just jot down a few thoughts and say hi.

I upgraded from a '93 4Runner 4x4 which served me well until a 16 year old :flipoff2: slid around a corner and hit it while it was parked, but that is a topic for another thread.....

The cruiser has noticably more torque and I barely use the throttle compared to me driving the 4Runner around with the gas pedal floored. With the 5 speed, the 4Runner was quicker in the end, but I had to wind it up all the time to get that.

The gas mileage isn't too bad, I got 14.5 mpg on my first tank in mixed driving. I changed out the front diff and x-fer case oil to Mobil 1 synthetic and will see if there is any noticable change. I'll change the rear diff fluid soon...

I get the Cruiser donk at very slow speeds coming to a complete stop or starting from a stop. Not every time and the severity changes, but I will check all the driveline joints and clean and lube the driveshaft splines by seperating the axles.

The braking on the truck has a lot of boost and makes the thing really easy to stop. I remember pushing way harder on the 4Runner brake pedal to get the same stopping effort. I wonder if this is why the brakes seem to wear faster due to the higher brake force and higher stopping effort compared to what a rig this size normall does. If the master cylinder was smaller and the braking was less effective, there would be less average brake force at the pad / rotor interface and the wear would decrease (unless one were to stomp on the pedal all the time). I can't think of another reason why cruisers eat pads and rotors....

I'm still going through the truck, changing fluids and checking stuff out, but so far I pretty happy with the upgrade. It seems like a lot of things in the engine bay are pretty accesible and designed for maintenance so compared to the 4Runner crammed-in-there-V6, I'm stoked....

One last thing, curbs and bumps are 10 times smoother in the cruiser and I can't wait to get to some offroad use. I'm not into hardcore wheeling, but I definitly want to check this bad boy out soon.... stay tuned....

Adios....

Congrats on the rig and welcome aboard :flipoff2:

:flipoff2: Welcome aboard :princess:
This forum will soon have you graving 40" MTRs, 5 point suspension etc. :grinpimp:
It seems to never end.
People buying over priced land tanks then dumping $10k more into mods all to get that extra 100 feet up the trail
Every mod is followed by a complaint about the mod but these folks know more about cruisers than anyone out there.

Welcome !
just don't listen to anybody on this board, they are all crazy... :D

I am also a new owner (3 months now) and if I was to do it all over agina, I would drive the truck for at least two monts before starting to do any significant changes; even fluids changes until you figure out that there are no major problems or noises, vibrations, leaks, etc. I went almost crazy the same day I got my truck and started making changes and now I have some noises/thunks/whinnes that I am not sure if there were there before or if I introduced them myself after the changes I made.
My wife could not believe that almost two days after I got the truck I had the whole front end axles taken apart repacking the birfs. Again this is jsut me.
Welcome and enjoy, I still don't regret selling my FJ60 and getting the FZJ80 (I sort of miss it) it is a more confortable ride, but less gas efficient.

Welcome!

Sounds like you're not afraid to turn a wrench and get a little dirty. You should love your Cruiser if you're willing to work on it.

Glad to have you here.

Sounds like you got a sweet rig. Pics?

Congrats and welcome!

Yeah, how about them pics? :grinpimp:

WOW! New smileys? :crybaby: :D What is this flamingo? :flamingo:

Anyway... welcome! :)

it's funny that anyone would say the 80 has a smooth ride. I have never thought it was smooth (i can feel every crack in the road.....some would say that's sporty, i don't know). I do think it handles it's size and weight very well. But i still say it drives and feels like a truck.

Welcome Dood! This is a great place for knowledge. Also a great place to find out who broke what and some good trash talk. Lets see some pics! :bounce2:

Welcome aboard! Wealth of knowledge available here.

As stated above, pics would be nice when you have time...

Thanks a bunch.
I'll get some pics up tonight when I get home for sure...

A quick note on the smooth ride, I immediately thought it rode rougher than my 93 4Runner and there is definitely some bump steering going on, but I think it only rides rougher on the expansion cracks and very small bumps.

Going over large potholes (LA is full of them) and speed bumps, the cruiser is definitely smoother and I get a smile :grinpimp: every time it goes over this sort of stuff.

So there is some advantage to IFS in ride quality sometimes, but there is also an advanatge to solid axles, mass, and good shocks....

Indeed. Make sure you get out and excercise those lockers :-)

Here's some pics. I shrunk em down since I only get 150 kb of space.....
Just the important stuff.....

The PO flushed the brake fluid every year, had the tranny fluid changed 15k ago, and just put new front brakes on. I've changed the rear pads, did a partial coolant change, and changed the front diff oil and the xfer oil so with the PM I hope for 200k+ miles :grinpimp:.....

Looks good. Color black? Gotta get those stock running boards off now to get away from the soccer mom/grocery getter look... ;p :flipoff2: Looks like you don't have the luggage rack, which is good news.
