Doing a buddy's front 80 axle...take a look.
Pulled the long side. No geared ring (ABS ring?) Are these Longfields? (owner says they're supposed to be Longs) They don't say Longfield on them (like my 55 Longs). Do 80 Longs say Bobby on them?
They also don't have the heat marks like the stockers.
So, could the non-ABS axles simply be early 80?
Also, non-ABS axle has some wear grooves that I can feel with my fingernail on the oilseal area... the stocker are nice & smooth there, should I put the ABS equipped axles back in?

I honestly have no clue LPH, but I will swing by tomorrow to say hi and help how I can.

It's a used axle housing, maybe the shop that did the job used an ABS axle and reused one of the axles?

IIRC Longs come without the ABS ring, you need to use a brass drift to knock them off and apply the ring.

Hmm, is the owner driving a non-ABS rig? I forget the year....if so, you could just knock off the ABS ring...

Do the birfs click/catch/etc when moving them around, or are they still smooth?

I'd say the ABS one is OEM and the non-ABS one is a Longfield.

Here's a picture of the Longfields for the 80.

Yup, those look just like what we pulled out. But doesn't Bobby put his name on them any more? How do you tell a real Long from a knockoff?
Rig is '94. Has ABS sensors.

We desperately need more opinions...

On what Pigster?

If one side does not have an ABS ring you are going to have to source one and press it on.

Or, just de-ABS the vehicle.

If this is for Sue's rig, I would probably go against that option. I would rather Sue have ABS.

Unfortunately, these rings are not sourceable separately from Toyota. You gotta buy the whole birf.

:crybaby:

Good luck.

Call the shop that did it and ask what exactly they did.

Is Sue's ABS disabled? (Check the fuse in the cab.) Was she getting an ABS or ECU code? Something is very odd/wrong if she was not getting an ABS light with a missing ring. (Or at least I would think so...)

x2 on sourcing the ring.

We're thinking that good old OEM axles is just fine for this application at this time, since we got good spares just hanging around. Any possible objections?

If they are good, slap 'em in. Or swipe an ABS ring off 'em if you want a long on one side and OEM on the other.

Now this is going off of memory, so don't quote me on this: I believe that the shop just swapped all of the existing components into a new housing. I wasn't part of that deal so I'm not sure.

As for the pic LPH posted, the top one is stock and the bottom one looks like a Long to me. You can tell by the shaft between the bell and the splines where the drive flange bolts up. See how the stock one (on top) necks down and the bottom one doesn't? You can also tell by how big the cage is inside the Long. IIRC, 80-series longs are not stamped. They may be now but I'm pretty sure mine don't say anything. Also, 80-series Longs do not come with an ABS ring. You have to knock the ring off of the factory birf and beat it onto the Long or buy a new ring and beat it on. Hope that helps!

I think this is a good idea unless she is running a part-time kit. Longs on an AWD rig wear out really fast. Mine are already starting to click.

I have an extra ABS ring somewhere if needed.

But to echo opinions-OEM birfs will give better service than Longfield birfs in a full time 4WD situation. Just be careful as there are 2 different lengths.

It looks like whoever serviced that truck before neglected to re-install the ABS ring.

Pig -

Just to clarify, she is still running 4WD with ARB F/R locks correct?

Yup, AWD all the time. ARBs front & rear.
Finding all kinds of looseness all over this axle, I don't really care why or how, just wanting to put this together with stock axles, correct drive flanges, all torques to spec and make it stay dry for a while...

I agree LPH.

Passenger side oil seal, how I found it...think it would leak some?

EDIT: could really loose lower knuckle studs lead to this?
