Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, my father-in-law was a POW in Germany towards the end of WWII. My father spent 3 years as a POW in the Philippines during WWII and was rescued from behind enemy lines as the Japanese were retreating in the Pacific. I have ordered personalized plates "WWIIPOW" to honor the greatest generation, our parents.
Respect.

Great cruiser to start with @BrownWolf! Like @rfitzpatrick I’m in northern colorado as well.

I’m between Ft Collins and Ault. Work from home but go to Greeley almost daily.

Also @PabloCruise and @Laughingjackal are in the Windsor area so lots of cruiser heads around.
Howdy @BrownWolf and @rfitzpatrick !

@FJBen is right, there are a few of us around.

I have heard L1 in Loveland get some good reviews. Classic Cruisers in Salida is not too far, probably about the same as Proffitts.

I have been through my 40 and 55 a little, if you get bored you can look through my threads (see signature).

Let us know if we can help at all!

Thanks! Good to know!

Step 1 apply copious amounts of Fluid Film and of course it would threaten to rain!

Weird coincidence. I’m pretty sure I saw you on 93 just south of boulder this afternoon. You were heading north, I was going south in a gx460 with a trailer. You had your turn signal on, but I couldn’t tell where you turned looking in my mirror. It was the standard “white, late model 40, wonder if he’d sell it?” But I couldn’t figure out where you went. Hit me up if you like. I’m in Boulder too (boulder canyon) & a member of rising sun. Lots of knowledge & contacts in the club, and lots of willingness to help people too.!
Best

2 more steps!

-Adjust brakes and replace shocks
-Add some AT tires

Drive it!
OK, I plan on a few more than that, but yes I will definitely be driving it!

Seems about right, I live just south of the city limits, but definitely not selling!

You might want to check the date code on those tires before you drive it too far. Body doesn't look too bad from the photos but that undercarriage is pretty crusty. Not sure Fluid Film is going to help you much there.

Great to see you jumping in to save it; especially given its history with your family.

Thanks for your comments about the tires, good point. I just purchased a set of steel wheels with relatively fresh Toyo Open Country 33/10.5/15. I plan to remove the rust from the frame, give the frame the POR15 treatment, and get a 2.5" lift kit installed to accommodate the new wheels. After that, I am going to think more about the body. Probably start with polishing/buffing and then think about the body rust.

I have successfully used POR15 but the key is in the prep. I used an industrial sized angle grinder with a wire wheel cup to remove everything that I could and then drenched everything with their metal prep before finally painting with POR15. I was only doing axles and even then I had them removed and disassembled. It will not be easy to do the frame with everything attached but I'm sure it can be done.

You'll get better results/effect at slowing rust with a product like this

Best applied in warm weather it seeps into places fluid film will never get to

Thanks, good advice, I was debating a regular drill vs angle grinder. I have the wire wheels and some wire brushes already. I’ll see how it goes with the drill first and adjust as necessary. I was planning to do the full POR15 process, so glad that you emphasize the prep. I am sure it would be better, but I’m not quite ready to lift the body and want to do what I can to treat the frame.

Get a needle scaler to chip out crusty bits. Time saver. The Chief brand from Harbor Freight is wicked. Good quality for HF.

Back from an excellent vacation and back to work! Tires arrived today (thanks @Etaco), as well as a custom Brown Wolf tire cover (got to wear the brand). The FJ40 is showing some attitude. Looks like I am going to need to have a 2.5" lift kit installed though (a project for a later date). I also received ramps, so no excuses for not getting started on the rust on the frame and undercarriage! A quick check of the Fluid Film and it looks like it is doing its job. More on that when I get to work on the rust.
