He's almost 2 (will be in November) and he's a yellow lab. Yesterday i noticed he seemed to be breathing really loud, almost as if he was stopped up or congested. We have had a drought around here and the grass is almost dead in the back yard. The guy loves to chase the ball and when he does he stirs up a cloud of dust. So i figured he had just been choked up on dust. This morning when i go to feed him his face looked really swollen, especially around his eyes and he had knots all over his muscles in his front shoulder and rear leg area. I kinda got worried and called the vet. Vet says it sounds like an allergic reaction to something and to give him some benedryl. So, i did and he's asleep now, seems like the swelling and knots are going down but he still seems to be breathing rough.

Now i'm trying to figure out what the heck he could have gotten into. There is nothing in the back yard that i think he could have eaten; and then i thought about the two large hickory trees in the yard. They are really dropping some acorns now. Noticed him chewing on a couple the other day. I also remember from my dendrology classes that the shell contains a type of poison in very small quantities. Do you guys think that the acorns are causing the reaction? I can't think of anything else. I worry about the little fawker. He's like my kid.

My husky had the exact same symptoms. Turned out to be fire ant bites. She stuck her head in a mound. About killed her!

yep, same here our neighbours lab got stung and he swole (sp?) up big time and his breathing got rough as well, lasted for a day or so. he doesn't eat bees any more.
my husky / collies eats them like candy with no ill side effects...
cheers

I have a Boston Terrier who's allergic to just about everything, but bug bites especially. I was backpacking with him this summer, he got a few mosquito bites and deer fly bites and his whole body became covered in blisters and his head swelled up to almost double size. I thought he was going to asphyxiate since I had forgot the Benadryl. I had to hike out off the trail with him strapped to my pack in a collapsable bucket. Good thing he's only a 20 pounder! I always keep some Benadryl around now, in the 60 and in my pack. Works great. Hope your hound does OK.

Thanks guys, i feel better. The benadryl seemed to have helped. Perhaps if he did eat a bee or some fire ants he has learned his lesson.

i hope he feels better soon, i know how it feels when your friend can't talk but is in pain...
cheers

i have a lab/border collie mix and shes a real geek, shes had trouble her hole life with allergies and we had her blood taken and sent out to a some lab in MA to do tests and it turns out shes allergic to every kind of grass there is! maybe the drought and/or change of season is causing allergies, my dog had the symptoms of yours but now shes regularly treated and doinggg finnee...

THe lumps all over the muscles in his shoulders and rear legs is what really scared me.

bees will sometimes cause their throats to swell up...

Labs don't learn lessons like that - stay on him 24/7 - better that you would a human ankle biter. I have a 4 yr old Lab - love her to death and watch her every second. She knows when to come to me for help - she sits and holds up a paw - I say, "need help" and she lets me take the pricker thing out of her paw pads - then off we go good as new! Keep him safe and you'll have a loyal friend forever. ;)

Something about acorns.......http://www.caf.wvu.edu/~forage/acorns/acorns.htm

There's so much crap that can be part of dust that it's probably impossible to determine what caused this without a lab ( read:blood work) workup. It could be something that blew into your area or, since allergies can pop up in animals (including us) at any time, something that's always been there.

no clue what it was, but I wish both of you luck :) and that is one fine looking lab :)

Beau(my lab) is really slowing down in his golden years.......makes me very sad :(

so how is he doing?

He's doing well. Swelling went down, no more knots on his muscles. Still haven't figured out exactly what it was that he got into. I gave him one last benadryl this morning.

Now he's passed out next to me as i surf mud.
thatch passed out (Small).webp
