He's almost 2 (will be in November) and he's a yellow lab. Yesterday i noticed he seemed to be breathing really loud, almost as if he was stopped up or congested. We have had a drought around here and the grass is almost dead in the back yard. The guy loves to chase the ball and when he does he stirs up a cloud of dust. So i figured he had just been choked up on dust. This morning when i go to feed him his face looked really swollen, especially around his eyes and he had knots all over his muscles in his front shoulder and rear leg area. I kinda got worried and called the vet. Vet says it sounds like an allergic reaction to something and to give him some benedryl. So, i did and he's asleep now, seems like the swelling and knots are going down but he still seems to be breathing rough.
Now i'm trying to figure out what the heck he could have gotten into. There is nothing in the back yard that i think he could have eaten; and then i thought about the two large hickory trees in the yard. They are really dropping some acorns now. Noticed him chewing on a couple the other day. I also remember from my dendrology classes that the shell contains a type of poison in very small quantities. Do you guys think that the acorns are causing the reaction? I can't think of anything else. I worry about the little fawker. He's like my kid.
