ummm, there is nothing hush, hush about straight piping a cat. (I plan on doing it myself). My manifold needs to come off, so all that egr stuff will come off when it does, and I'll fab up, or have fabbed up some block off plates. Does that work out as far as everyone knows?
 
Hoping to button up a couple of things tonight, Hopefully post some more pics that are sized differently (will have to play with it I sized 'best to web', anybody know the size I should be shooting for, If I go fullsize, it will take up too much space.
 
First, I think blocking stuff off at the source is good, like GL said, less stuff to fail.

As to photos, I go into photoshop and save at 2.5" x 3.33" at 200dpi for the shots I posted. They came out to like 350kb average.

Well, my exhaust shop wouldn't do it for me...

I think I'm good, I live in a county with no emissions testing, I have five year collector plates, when those expire the truck will be 30 and I think thats antique and exempt, unless they do something crazy.
 
Most exhaust shops won't. But they will make you a pipe that fits the space with flanges and anything else you want. Of course, you'll have to install it yourself, but you don't seem to be adverse to that.

Ok, my next question. Jim pointed out that one of my vacuum lines was hooked to the wrong place, and of course he was right when I looked closer. So, the one in the middle of the carb goes where Jim directed, the line on the side closest to the driver fender goes to? The HAC line where I had the other one, I think I just had them turned around, but want to make sure.

Thanks....and more pics to come, last night jsut didn't work out, I wanted to get it degreased, and I couldn't find my cane cap, so y'all would have to see my duct tape again, and we wouldn't want that.
 
Trapper, I believe your VCV for the distributor is flipped around;
-The two that are T'd together off the VCV body should go to the air cleaner; not the dizzy
-The one that you do have going to the air cleaner needs to go to the dizzy

I was told by Jim that the Primary advance on the dizzy is the one closer to the body of the diz cap and that the one further out was the secondary or "HAC" advance so the outer one goes to atmosphere or air cleaner and the inner one goes to carb.

Jim? Correct or incorrect.

And what is the Gas Filter? We saw this on one of the diagrams but didn't know what they were talking about
 
Ahh, I understand. The original diagram didn't have provisions for the HAC, I was going to decipher it one of these days...
The gas filter is that crazy looking 3 tipped port on the intake manifold; on the arm closest to the radiator.

Where do you have the front dizzy diaphragm port line going to? It looks like it T's into the VCV, then where?

I'm no help to you on this one, if I read it correctly, I'm capped off on that carb port, sorry
 
All, good, I'm trying to keep my HAC as I live at just over 4300 feet, so there is a possibility of my HAC needing to work. (Right? it activates at like 3900 feet or so, so Mine has in theory always been on, but if and when I dropped below that set elevation like a trip out to the Arco desert, then it would shut off...?) Or should I jsut advance my timing to compensate for elevation ans scrap it all? It sure looks cleaner without it, but that can't be my reason for getting rid of it.

Correct.

Unless the truck is still using HAC.

And what is the Gas Filter? We saw this on one of the diagrams but didn't know what they were talking about

The gas filter is the manifold vacuum fitting in the intake manifold. It's translated to engrish as a filter because inside the plastic top is a ball of cotton, to act as a filter in case the vac hoses fall off and air leaks in.:cool:

So mine is different because I want to keep my HAC. Arrgghhh, maybe I should just get rid of it to simplify things, How many, if any, problems would that cause?

I assume then that its something I removed. Jim, can you tell from the photos? Is this an issue? The "line to Gas Filter" thing? or will the way I have it set up work out since I'm not using the HAC vacuum port. Forgive me, I'm getting confused a little.

What I mean to say is...I have my primary source of vacuum (carb to dizzy primary vacuum advance) dealt with...does the line to the Fuel Filter port on the manifold constitute an uneeded secondary source of vacuum.

I would say that in your position, at your elevation, try to keep that HAC as it is basically variable timing which I don't have. I live at 5500 and prob. won't travel below 4300 much so it makes more sense for me to delete and just set the timing up with more advance.

Jim, so I understand this correctly, when setting the timing and looking through the inspection window, the one mark is stock setting of seven degrees? or is it TDC and the primary vacuum advance is providing the seven degrees?
edit: I figured this one out....stock=7 degrees advanced from TDC...Primary vacuum adds "curve" of increase

All you high fallutin coloradans running around your high elevations in your cruisers....just kidding. That's kind of what I thought. And now that I've calmed down a little, I'm making more sense of it, and think I have it under control. Thanks a bunch. I'll be on with more questions tonight I'm sure.
 
My thread, and I declare the HAC v. Non-HAC a non-hijack.

(due to the fact that all this information is good, and will help other people make the right decisions for their vehicles if they choose to do this as well, also, I considered going non-HAC and asked some of the questions that lead to the discussion)

Yes, the pictures show a problem. somebody has an edited photo showing how the unused dissy advance needs connected to a vent, and the dissy cap VCV needs connected to a source of manifold vacuum (the missing filter fitting).

The two are currently connected on a tee fitting. They need separate connections to different places.
 
I'm confused too. Does anybody have a picture of exactly what this is supposed to look like?

Also another question. The pipe that comes off of the smog pump (runs along ds inner fender, then dissapears somewhere above the skid plate, which will be coming off tonight), Where exactly does it go, and how do I get rid of it? I'm assuming it hooks in somewhere near the cat, but can't see it right now (I'm at work, and doing some cyberwrenching...shhhh don't tell)

Roger that thanks, can I just run it straight to a single pronged fitting where the "fuel filter" was?

To confirm things....fliphkd778's post #226 has a edited photo, so the line he indicates needs to go to manifold vacuum ("fuel filter" location")
is correct, but outer (HAC) vacuum advance on dizzy goes to atmosphere (like it does but without the "tee") and that change will make the passengerside of the desmog correct.

Is that correct?
