my cruiser has a COMBINATION u-joint. both outer and inner clips

I hope I am able to post pics or a link to pics. this is the front propeller shaft and the u-joint is the rear joint at the transfer case. as you can see, the caps that attach to the drive shaft are outer clips and the caps that attach to the transfer case are inner clips.

has anyone else had a landcruiser with this arrangement?

this particular u-joint needs replacement bad and I am worried that I am going to get the wrong part. if anyone has been in the same situation as I am, what part did you use? I am hoping that moog 285 can work, because that is what I told my brother-in-law to order for me. the moog 285 has all inner clips

any advise would be most appreciated.

get in touch with @beno he will know exactly what you need.

I just redid mine & it should have all inner clips. As long as the yoke & DS are stock inner clips is what you need. Go OEM. They pretty damn good & last 150K+ miles.

I would take it to a good driveshaft shop. That would appear to be a custom setup with an OEM yoke with the inner clips and a Spicer yoke with the outer clips. John

I don't see why outer clips won't hold the bearing caps on just fine if the yoke is designed for it even if the trunnions are designed for the inner clips.

If there is any slop the OP will be right back in the same place again in short order, however.

Read the little card that comes with the new joint carefully as many u-joints ship with only enough grease to hold the needle bearings in place for shipping and the hollow needs to be full of grease even on the ones without zerks.

It looks like a yoke end broke and the drive shaft shop only had a outer clip to get them back on the road.

my neighborhood mechanic said he could replace the u-joint for $50 and have it done in two days or less, so I have decided to let him have a go at it.
he actually showed me a diagram where he takes a measurement from where the cup meets the inner clip to where the cup meets the inner clip opposite/across from it, he measures the diameter of that cup itself, then gets all the same measurements with the other two cups. after he gets that info he looks on this chart that has a bunch of u-joints listed. he really seemed to know what he was talking about and I learned something from him.

as long as nothing hits against anything else that matters, it seems like using both inner AND outer clips could be done. it would be twice as unlikely to accidentally come apart.

thanks to Golgo13, LFD2037, inkpot, Parsnip, and Offroads4x4 for the replies. I will let everybody know what happens.

that's a neapco conversion joint. the shaft is a spicer shaft and the neapco joint makes the conversion over to the toyota yoke that bolts to the t-case flange. that was a very early method of making the conversion to a spicer shaft. either replace the entire shaft with a toyota style, or get the correct flange yoke and go all spicer. those conversion joints are not good to use because they are hard to find. there was a group buy not long ago to get a new spicer style CV shaft made by Tatton's. they are relatively inexpensive and will last a long time.
