For the readers Digest version see post two. :)

My 1996 Land Cruiser named Dezzy broke my heart this year.

As many of you know I had suspected a Head Gasket issue with her much of last year. I finally pulled most of the funds together and in November I dropped her off into the very capable hands of SD Trux to put on a brand new head and gasket at only 187k miles.
Turns out opting for a new head was not a choice since it was cracked and would need replacement anyway. By funding this repair I had committed in my mind to this Cruiser until the end. I assumed she would die off in Baja at 388k miles 20 years from now.

Well during a Baja trip in late January I started her up in the morning to head out and watch the Baja 250 and I heard a new noise, a ticking sound. I immediately popped the hood and checked the oil and looked things over. Everything checked out and what could I do except enjoy the race and the weekend? After another incredible Baja trip I parked her and drover her maybe twice before taking her back into John and the guys in mid February. Meanwhile my new sliders were painted and ready to mount since sitting in my garage for 7 months and my buddy and I both got Bump It Offroad tube bumpers and that was freshly powder coated and mounted.

So after about 1,500 miles since my new head had been done I get the call from John that it will probably need a new long block. I can't rememb much after those words came out of his mouth but something about there is still a chance it is the steering pump pully and you can have the belt removed to rule that out and be 100% sure it's not that. I couldn't convince myself to shell out any more money so I just told him to have it ready for me to pickup. I haven't been able to talk about it much or even do much with her for the last 6 weeks. She is just sitting in the driveway with a brand new head and front bumper while the new sliders are still in the garage ready to go on.

I did give a half hearted attempt to pull the belt and rule out the pully but the first bolt got rounded off and I now have a new socket that is supposed to get it off but I really don't have the desire to mess with her anymore.

So after months of research on engine rebuilds, engine swaps, and new vehicles I am leaning toward trying to sell her as is and be completely up front about the engines possible major repair and make a move to a V8 Lexus GX470 that will suite my Family's needs in towing a travel trailer which my 80 would have always struggled with even a small 16' travel trailer.

So now trying to figure out what a fully built, non-locked 80 with a brand new head, brand new sliders, brand new front bumper and 188,000 miles but a possible long block replacement is worth.
If it was in perfect running condition I would probably ask $9,000 - $9,800 so what should I deduct for the engine problem? $2,000 maybe $3,000? I know this will be a tough sale since I will need a buyer who is either a great driveway mechanic or someone looking for a truck to throw an egine swap into. But I am interested to hear what you guys would price her at. I won't be offended by your price opinion.

In short my 96 80 Series I have owned since 2007 recently had the Head and gasket replaced only to run into a major problem in the lower half of the engine now.

So now I am looking for your thoughts on what a fully built 80 is worth with a major engine repair needed.

Basic run down of vehicle:
1996 Land Cruiser FZJ80
188,000
No Lockers
2" Iron Man Lift
35" tires
Slee skid plate
Hannah rear bumper
Brand new sliders freshly painted & ready to be mounted.
Bump it Offroad tube bumper just powder coated and installed only to sit in the driveway now.
OEM snorkel
Deflared and Duraback Lined
Cargo drawer / Sleeper
Home made Curtains for sleeping
Leather no rips & Visors stay up.
Updated Stereo & Speakers

No body damage but pleanty of pinstripes to buff out.
Any and all major maintenance has been done from front axle to all coolant hoses and air intake hose.

The Bad:
Ticking noise from engine, suspect lower engine rebuild or engine swap.
One rust spot at rear spoiler passenger side.
Radiator should be replaced with a KOYO to run cooler.
Hood needs a new vinyl sticker.
And the one mechanical item I never did although recommended was to replace the worn throttle cable.

:( So sorry to hear this Mark. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

That has to be tough... :( There are enough people on ih8mud that would probably love to have that rig and pull the engine. I would start a little high in the asking price and see what happens. You never know! I would certainly post here and reach a nationwide audience rather than trying to sell local.

As a fellow new head recipient, I truly feel your pain and I'm so sorry to hear this. You asked for opinions - I'd take a stab at perhaps $4-5K. You've got a super parts truck at worst with at least that. Someone would love to have that brand new top end I'm sure! The other goodies are worth a decent amount too.

Do yourself a favor and get that belt pulled. Not knowing will haunt you. If that's not it, then you've got a big decision. Remember, I'm the guy that had the head gasket job botched the first time before I took it to John so I paid for it twice (at least the firsts time didn't include a new head). To me it was worth the extra $ and cheaper than a new truck payment for sure. You need something reliable for you and the family, I didn't.

Best of luck with whatever direction you take.

You've easily got that in parts. PITA to part out and then what do you do with the carcass that's left.

Put it in the classified here - best chance for a buyer, but don't do it until you've confirmed it's the block. Could you find a wrecked 80 with engine intact and do that swap?

Basically all engine swaps are rediculously expensive but of course staying with the same inline 6 engine is the most cost efficient.

My buddy found these guys who have a good price on a new tall block and install unfortunately they are located out of state. http://www.enginehaus.com/engines/1993-1997-toyota-lc-fzj80-1fz-fe-4.5l-dohc-i6-engine
I would have to tack on shipping my vehicle or airline tickets.

But I have to consider my future needs and this may be the best time to make a move on a V8 platform so my family won't be limited to a tiny light weight travel trailer.

First and foremost get a second opinion, I'm shock to hear that the block is crack. These are solid cast iron blocks and rarely do hey crack.

If it does happen to be your block then personally I would part it out. You got a lot of part worth some money but does take work and time. Parting out might be your best bet at getting most of the money back. Parts trucks aren't worth much usually.

Not to sound like a vulture but if you do part it out I'll be first inline for the front bumper, seats and center console! :)

So did you rule out the pulley? I had similar thing happen to me but it was after replacing the ps pump. I barely kicked the gear and it created a terrible noise.

Sorry if I missed it but is it internal or a cracked block?

So sorry to hear Mark. x2 get another opinion and be POSITIVE it is a major bottom end issue before you make any rash decisions. The V8 option or cummins 6 cyl would be a good investment but you need to be sure that the rig will be good for your family for a long time for it to be worth it. I sure have my fingers crossed for you that there is a good cost effective solution for you so you don't have to get rid of it or even worse Kill it by parting it out. :crybaby:

What is up with this guy he has talked himself down in price three times in one day?

Chris is a good guy. I bought some fjc parts from him a while back (full icon billet links and panhard bar). The end on one of the links (bushing side) was slightly elongated. He paid out of his pocket to get me a replacement from Icon, while icon received the damaged part I sent back to him.
