I took my fj40 with a 350 sbc and block hugger headers out wheeling yesterday. I had alot of carb troubles (edelbrock = crap  ) and stalled alot whenever I got on any offcamber situation. This resulted in lots of flooding, lots of gas smells, and lots of backfiring. I don't know if my poor running engine has anything to do with it, but my brakes were locking up on me. My brake peddel got extremely firm and I could smell brakes. Not to mention that when in neutral, on flat ground, I was unable to roll my cruiser by pushing it. The only thing I can think is that my master cylinder got too hot and my brake fluid expanded from the heat. When I touched my master cylinder it did not feel nearly hot enough for this to happen. Has anyone else had this? Could this be something occouring between the malfunctioning carb and the brake power booster via the vacume line? Thanks for any info

Cruiserdoc, did you ever figure out what was wrong with your brakes? Does it go away if you let the truck cool down, then return after you start it and drive it again? If it is heat-related, need it be the at master cylinder? How about at the brakes themselves? Could it be related to water in your fluid expanding upon getting hot?
Anyway, whatever you found, please post it. I've searched FAQ and not found anything on this. Most of the brake problems are mushy pedal or pedal to the floor.
Thanks.

Sounds to me like you need to get rid of the edelbrock carb and put a rochester on it , or you can buy the off road spring kit that edelbrock sells it will help some , as far as your brakes sounds like to me your booster might be going out , or like that other guy said improper adjustment ofthe push rod , good luck let us know

I've been thinking more about this and agree with mr_manny about rod adjustment. Good luck, and please post your solution.
