So, I recently started considering an 80 series after finding one for my mother. I really liked the entire package that the 80 offered. My wife, knowing me as well as she does, suggested I finally get one of the imported diesels I have always wanted. This of course was music to my ears so I started searching.

My wife really LOVES the 60 series, but I always wanted a 70 series. That said, she one out when we found our red, 1987 HJ60.

Our HJ60 is a 24 volt, 2H 5speed high roof model in GX trim. This Japanese spec model is a SEMI float non locked model. The seller reported 61,000 original miles and believe it.

I started of course by picking it up in California.

Once it was home, it was general maintenance first.

I changed all fluids, flushed brakes and clutch, flushed and cleaned the coolant system several times.

Replaced the coolant hoses, replaced the fuel filter (may have been original) and replaced the vacuum diaphragm on the injection pump (mine was fine but what the hell).

I also adjusted the fueling for altitude (I live at 4700 ft) and adjusted the valves (finding a couple of worn rockers, common on the 2H, I have ordered 12 replacements).

Then of course, I took it for a drive.

I don't leave ANYTHING original. I am not a purist, I am a tinkerer, for better or for worse.

I called up Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters and had him set aside an OME deluxe heavy suspension package with an extra leaf for the front PTO. I also had him order up an ARB 24 volt compressor, 4.56 gears and an install kit. I picked it all up and got started on the suspension. the gears will be professionally installed.

I also picked up some 33x10.50 KM2's and had my other set of non chrome wagon wheels powder coated in a very off white.

After dealing with customs, I received a nice little upgrade from RADD Cruisers.

More later...

Nice! you picked this up from that guy Elvin?
very cool looking cruiser!
Looking forward to reading more on this build.

Man, that's nice ...

Now I want one.

i managed to find a nice h60 and when i was about to buy it wife backed out on the whole thing. i envy you... very nice cruiser too.

Every hj60 should have a turbo: recall :D

Congrats - great looking rig!

you are going to turn that diesel back up pretty soon .. !

Too late!

Let me ask you. I installed the turbo, ran the fuel screw out TWO full turns. I get a little black smoke until the turbo spools and then no smoke at all. My EGT's do not go over 800F up hill post turbo. Should I add more fuel? It feels very sprightly.

Continuing. I installed the suspension using the Ubolt flip kit from LCWizard. the suspension went together great and rides awesome. I also pulled the sway bars off as I hate them and notice very little difference without them.

I ended up with this.

Nice rig! I've also have the ARB 24V compressor on order. Where do you plan to install it?

I love the color and retro graphics on it. Wish my 61 was that clean. And that red!

Wow. This is cruiser porn. Subscribed!

Nice rig! I've also have the ARB 24V compressor on order. Where do you plan to install it?

Pretty sure it will live on the passengers (left) fenderwell. I have had an ARB compressor under the hood of my FJ40 rock crawler for over 10 years, exposed to mud, moisture, vibration and heat and it has not failed me.

With the turbo under hood, I was concerned, but a few days of testing it have shown me that it is not too hot.

Turbo time!!!

So.......... The turbo sat there, staring at me for weeks, I contemplated a complete head tear down prior to the install but this rig runs so sweet, has such low miles and the thought of removing the head and breaking the seal on the head gasket made me uncomfortable.

On the Denco setup, you pull off one of the lifter inspection covers and weld on the oil return tube. The Denco gets the dimensions correct as the oil drain is over 3 times the size of the supply line, allowing the oil to drain quickly.

Once that was done, I installed the supply line. To do this, you remove the EDIC control box, use a 14mm to remove the oil pressure sending unit, apply some yellow Teflon to the threads and install the T. The braided supply line runs over to the turbo.

I placed the line in a clear plastic cup, wired the fuel lever to OFF and cranked the engine until I had oil to the line and into the cup. I did this to clear the line and verify oil pressure (which was significant even at cranking speed).

I decided to run a Moroso Catch can on the PCV system. I did this for a couple of reasons. One reason is to monitor how much oil I push through, which I think helps monitor blow by and second, because oil in the combustion affects Cetane. I had to use a 5/8-1/2mnpt 90 degree fitting as Mr. Toyota decided that that HUGE line size was needed for this little diesel. I had to special order the fittings and NAPA was the only place that had 5/8 line rated for fuel and oil.

I previously installed Isspro EGT and Boost gauges with 24V bulbs on the top of the dash. I removed the dash and drilled straight through the severely dry rotted and cracked dash. I'm happy with the gauge location.

The first drive was a disappointment, LOW boost and low power. I went home and realized that I had not capped off the 5/8 port on the side of the throttle, that makes for a significant power drop lol. So, I capped that off and went back out, big improvement (only about 7 PSI though) and REALLY low EGT's. I went back, increased fueling by two turns and made a full turn in on the waste gate actuator. The result was black smoke off boost and 9 psi with no smoke and 800F (post turbo) EGT's uphill, under load.

Now, it feels quite snappy, and actually accelerates up hill lol. I can't wait to feel it with the regear.

outSTANDING rig man. Absolutely beautiful. I love the way the white wagon wheels compliment the color and striping. The body on that thing is gorgeous too! What kind of rack options can you get with the high top?

Keep up the modding! Its turning out awesome!
