And that $1k, that was to get the running board fluid cooler capped and environmentally disposed of. Oh, and since the running boards are tied into the airbag electronics, the dealer suggested we install an ARB to get the airbags operational. Yeah, an ARB, I dont know what it is either, but we shouldnt be driving this thing without airbags. :D

Oh, and the removal doesnt leave any holes, took me about 30 mins to remove with hand tools. Do it, Do it!

Does yours have factory NAV ??

Off with the running boards

I get my wife's 98 Cruiser in 10 months. My lease is up on the Wrangler and she wants something a bit smaller. The first things I'm doing are taking the running boards off and adding a roof rack. Can't wait!

I already took off the wiind guards for the hood and sunroof. The screws from the sunroof were scratching the paint and now I have 2 rust spots to fix this weekend.

Do you find there's much less wind noise without the sunroof wind guard? I noticed it on my wife's 80, luckily I took it off before it wore through the paint. When I take the roofrack off, the 80 is remarkably quiet. I'll move my 100 cross-bars as far back as possible for that reason.

I didnt get the NAV or 3rd row. I like the simplicity of the regular stereo, although the NAV certainly will get you some cool tech points.

Be very glad you didn't get the NAV..Mine went south this past summer and I have regretted getting the thing ever since...For the price to fix it, I could have a very nice head unit if I had the regular stereo instead of the factory NAV unit...Naturally, this happened 6 weeks after my extended warranty expired. It wouldn't have paid for the repair even if it hadden't expired, I came to find out after reading the terms of the warranty..Outside of that and a failed tranny at 63,K , my 66,000 mile '01 has been pretty trouble free....

Welcome to the hundy side of the LC world LSUfj! Loads of great information here ...just like the other LC MUD forums ;).

I tested the running board theory by watching how my wife got in and out of the truck. She didn't use them, and I kept hitting my shins, so I said they had to go and she realized they weren't needed. Now the kids complain constantly. I keep a small step ladder in the back to get to the roof rack, which I use often.

As far as running over them - It will probably just ruin your tires. Those boards are tough!

Looks great, man. Taking mine off my black 2000 today. Do you remember the size ratchet (drive) and socket you used to remove the RBs? My main concern is the supposed 'hard-to-get-to' bolt near the AC lines. Tks!

Just use a 3/8" drive with some extensions and a universal joint and you should be good. Maybe some deep sockets too. It is really not a difficult job.

But there is definitely gravel and dirt sitting up in there waiting to dump on your face! Be sure to wear goggles.

Easy job.....wear goggles. This thread is 4 years old btw.

Got 'em off! You guys were right about the goggles! Lot of rust and just dirt in general. I started on the front passenger side; that took the bulk of my time. The rest was a cakewalk. It's amazing the difference taking the RBs and the rear spoiler off makes! No more mom/mall cruiser. Now I gotta get some 285 BFGs A/Ts on her and maybe then I'll have a tiny bit of 'cred' on this forum. Thanks for the help!!
