Best place to get some silver?

Thanks

I am actually doing the same thing this weekend to the LX. I bought "chrome" spray paint from autozone (wal-mart has it also as does really any auto repair retailer) I then decided to black out all the chrome on my grill/headlights with a matte black finished with a clearcoat. I am then going to paint the gold trim area in a gunmetal black similar to the 40th anniv/CE trim. I hope it looks like I think it will -- i will know on Sunday.

Smitty,

I have never had much luck with getting paint to stick to chromed parts trim or otherwise without having them media blasted which would probably damage the plastic. At the very least make sure you scuff the surface real good with scocth brite or very fine grit sandpaper. Any part you miss in the tough to get to parts will likely flake.

jditom,
CruiserDan is the man to see for any OEM parts. He is a guru.

I don't think you are going to achieve the results you are looking for.

For those of you with any experience please advise.... I am planning on using a scotch brite pad/wheel to rough up the chromed plastic as good as possible, then spray on a primer "designed for plastic", then spray on 2 or 3 layers of paint "designed to stick to plastic", and finish with 2 or 3 layers of a polyurethane clear coat. So will this work--you guys have given me some doubt. I am planning the same process for the metal trim also. Please share your thoughts (as harsh as they may be).

You have a front grille emblem, a Fulltime 4WD emblem and the rear hatch emblem. All of those have little nooks in them that you simply can't get to with the scotchbrite wheel. It won't cost anything more than your time and the materials to try, but I just don't think its going to have a first-quality look and I cannot imagine it lasting very long. But I am rather picky and am not one to incorporate much "hay baler engineering" on my Cruisers, contrary to some of the stuff I have seen take place here, no offense intended.

You should have no problem getting the stuff to stick to plastic... it's done all the time. The problem is getting anything to stick to the chrome plating. To really to this right, you will likely need to pull all the parts off and sand through all of the chrome before painting.

If I were you... before doing anything to the bling, I would call around to the Cruiser Wreckers (MAF,SOR,Cruiserparts) and work a deal to trade your bling for some plain black. A friend of mine did this with all of the chrome on his 60 up at Spector. All the chrome trim pieces for a full set of plain black, straight accross the counter even steven... and Marv even bought him a soda as a thank you. Win win for the parts guys... they turn around and sell your bling to $omeone for top $ and they get rid of some poverty pack stuff that they would have ended up chucking at some point anyway.

Okay, since you said I could be harsh. You have a front grille emblem, a Fulltime 4WD emblem and the rear hatch emblem. I went with black pearl on this newest '97. The black pearl "Fulltime 4WD" is no longer available so I used the one off of the 40 series.

I scuffed and painted mine graphite gray and they're holding up nicely (8 months).

Why not offer the gold bling to one of the Lexus 'panty' owners to rebadge without sacrificing the essential character of their truck? Har, Har...

The OO of my truck ordered the 'Gold Package', and paid like $500 extra for it. Toyota says in their little gold bling booklet, that this is 24 karat gold plated and abrasives should never be used to clean it.

So, I figure, at least gold won't rust. Besides, it's hidden behind the bull bar and spare carrier, so not too wussy looking.

hahaha, jim, you stole that idea of the 4wd emblem of old!
