Hey all,

I am considering selling the 80 and would like to hear your opinions on what would be a reasonable price for the vehicle.

Here's are some quick stats on the truck:
1997 FZJ80 - wheeled 3 times lightly.
96K miles
Lockers F&R
OME lift - Heavies F&R
ARB front bumper
Custom rear bumper
Rear roll cage
No 3rd row seats
Great stereo - Pioneer P1R head unit/ADS&Rockford AMPs 400W/MBQuart-JLAudio speakers/
5 OEM wheels powder coated black
5 custom FJ40 OEM centers w/ 16x10 outers (may sell seperately)
5 New Toyo MT 35x12.5x16 or 315/75R/16
No rust and good shape all around.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I don't think you're gonna like what people post...but I'll take stab...

I'd say somewhere around $15k to $17k. Looks like it's in really good shape. Having been owned by a cruiser owner, I'd trust that it's in great mechanical shape and all fluids have been baselined.

You've probably put much more into it than that...but IMHO, that's my thought of what would be fair.

I really like your wheels...but I suspect your asking price might be a bit more than I'd like to spend... PM me if you plan on selling the wheels seperately.

Having been actively in the market and bought two 1997 FZJ-80s in the last 15 months, here is what I have seen:

- Trucks with less than 100K miles are almost gone. And one-owner, dealer-serviced with less than 100K are even rarer.

- The secret about the value of "lockers" is out, even amongst non-wheelers. Because that's the first question we all ask, sellers recognize that to be a premium addition.

Clean, stock '97s with lockers under 100K seem to be somewhere between $12,500 and $14,500, depending upon location and color. Your mods and accessories are only going to bring 50 cents on the dollar, if that. And as much as I love the wheels and the look, others may not. I would think maybe $16K, no offense intended.

I second...or third the price of $16K.

I think many will be disappointed with what our 80s are really worth. Mods do very little unless you can find someone who wants them. To many buyers mods are an indication that the truck may have been wheeled and turn off some people. I used to buy and sell cars and stock almost always sold for more and more quickly than modified. Personally I would take my truck back to stock and sell the mods separately for 50 cents on the dollar. Sometimes you can get lucky and find someone who sees value in what has been done.
Cheers,
Sean

PS: they are worth more up here in Canada, but it is a much smaller market and you need someone willing to import.

My first thought was $15 - $16. Looks like we are pretty consistent.

The "average" person will start wanting a newer vehicle at the higher prices and most nuts like us want to buy a stocker and build it up ourselves.

I think that philosophy is spot-on. If I were selling I'd run it on Mud and then eBay and AutoTrader. If it didn't sell after that, I'd be returning it to stock per the above. Or, I might go ram into a wood chipper and sell it to the insurance company.

Randy,
I knew that was your truck even before I saw your name. With the 40 rims etc, it's an awesome truck.

I'm going to finally be selling my 97 in the next week (hope to get ebay ad up tonight). To get the most $ back out of it I took it back to stock and sold off the mods along the way. Nick can fill you in as he helped.

If someone wants a clean 80 - buy Randy's. A true cruiserhead and good guy.

Mike

Good luck with it. I have always really liked what you've done with it.

Oh, and I agree that the 16K range is appropriate. Unless you eBay it.

I'd be willing to take it off your hands for, say, $12k, and that's FRIEND prices. No, just kidding. I'd say 15 or 16 is about right from what I've been seeing.

It's the age old problem: a used modified rig is typically not going to be worth more than the maximum loan amount unless you get a buyer in the market for those mods and paying cash.

So take retail value of the stock rig and multiple by 125%, and that's about the value of the mods you have. Just guessing, that's another way to get to around $16K. If your buyer has to ship, that will reduce the price they are willing to pay.

Nay

To the buyer, between $15K to $17K. To you, not sure. :frown:

Got my 97 CE in San Fransisco last June. 106,000 miles and really great shape but stock and no lockers. Black with grey and beige leather, for $13,500. I'd add $1500 for the lockers and stuff, maybe $2000 including the slightly better milage, so I say $15,500

Mike

I think somewhere around $15K. It is hard to put an exact price on the cruiser. Some modifications may not be to the liking of the potential buyer and might even detract from the value for some people.

Thanks very much to all who took the time to share their thoughts on pricing. Very helpful and much appreciated!

Mike - thanks for your kind words. Right back atcha!

An after thought. I posted my valuation at $15,500 but since then I have been perusing the local listings and I find that you can now buy a 100 series with this same mileage for $15,500. This may steal some of your buyers away.

Add me to the long list of guys lusting after those rims and tyres.

I say $10,000.....................

...................now where do i come to pick it up?

A viewpoint from someone who just bought a '97 LX450, but was looking for either (LC or LX): I found mods to be a turn-off and lowered the value IMO. Even if the mods are to the buyer's taste (and your's is very tasty I might add) and they were done properly, there's the unknown factor. Plus, making mods to your design spec (personalization) and seeing it through is more than half of what this is all about, right?

A low mileage, blank canvas is what I was looking for. Not to mention, alot of people are looking to buy as a primary vehicle/kid transporter. They don't want something to climb the mountain, just get them to the mountain.
