There is a sand boil and levee leak at Buck Chute in Eagle Lake that is getting bad. Corps had 180 trucks hauling sand from La. To Eagle Lake dumping it on the leak, 24/7.

They met at fire house on lake today. Corps is closing Lake to ALL recreational traffic. They will raise level of lake to 90 ele. by opening Muddy Bayou Control Structure.

They hope by raising water in lake it will support lake side at Buck Chute on lake side of levee. Eagle Pass chute on river side is much higher than lake level now. A 90 elevation on lake side is equivalent to a river stage of 43.8. which is just over flood stage of 43’.

River is predicted to crest on May 18 at 53.5. This means that river side will be 10’ higher than lake. They better hope it works if it don’t Eagle Lake will be history. 53.5 on river is a 99.7 elevation.

This is the part of the state that I grew up in. We had a 6000 acre camp on Chotard/Tennessee/Airplane lakes. At 53.5 most everything inside the levees will go under no one really builds more than 10' over floodstage.

Crazy stuff. Stay tuned. 2 weeks of this.

Wolf River pics for you Memphis guys

You see this is what's happening: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District, is working to strengthen a section of the main line Mississippi River levee system at Buck Chute near Eagle Lake, Miss., to help prevent sand boils.

A sand boil is when water seepage move materials under or through the levee during high water stages.

The work consists of clearing existing vegetation and constructing an earthen dike that will enclose an area to be filled with sand. This will reduce the water pressure on both sides of the levee and help prevent water seepage and materials shifting in and around the levee system.

The Vicksburg District, levee boards and local officials continue to closely monitor weather and river conditions. The Vicksburg District Emergency Operations Center is coordinating with the state emergency management agencies in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi concerning any necessary activities.

The Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees.

I heard this morning from my cousin that they are now predicting higher than the flood of 1927.

Eagle Lake Update

Eagle Lake began to fill and the Lake has risen to 79.1 feet (as of 5/2/2011).

Tomorrows expected level at Eagle Lake is 80.5 feet with an additional increase of 1.5-1.75 feet per day.

Eagle Lake is expected to reach the 90 foot elevation on 6 May 2011 and is expected to be at this temporary level until late June.

Road Closures in the Eagle Lake area will be determined by State and county officials (Issaquena and Warren) and be based on water levels. It is likely that Hwy 465 close on the evening of Monday, May 02, 2011.

Clearing within the berm area at Buck Chute is mostly complete, the majority of the sand has been installed and these improvements are expected to be completed on Tuesday or Wednesday. This will control seepage pressures on the land-side of the levee.

The Corps and the levee board monitor water levels and patrol levees 24 hours a day.

Oh crap!

Since I'm not in the loop on it, is your cousin hearing that through news channels, or does he work with the Corps and have new information?

My sister's house is for sure going to get water. It was right to the bottom of the door today and they will be getting more than 3 more feet on the Helena gauge.

It is a really nice house. They just bought it and now they are going to have to gut it and start over.

No insurance.

They were putting up levees all down HWY 61 today. Tons of activity. I did not see a ton of water in the delta outside the levees except around the Yazoo river at Redwood. They are going to get hammered in that part of the state for sure.

MAn sorry to hear that. A bunch of my friends went threw this during Katrina. It is a horrible thing.

What the corp of engineers is telling the fire dept is about 3" more than they are reporting in the news.

It is crazy to see the MS River right now.

It is to crest in Memphis Tues...at around 51 to 52.
