Evening everyone, I've been low-key for some time as a long time fj40 dreamer and current 3rd gen 4runner owner. Well, we've just upgraded to a 2010 GX. No current plans now other than driving and enjoying the GX, as the current purpose (and please laugh/make fun all you want) is a soccer hauler.

We've had our 2002 4Runner for sometime now, I've built it into what I like to think is a very stealthy capable ride. FJ springs, wheels, 32x10 BFG KO2's, and a few other mods and improvements - I just posted it for sale now :(. It took us all over Michigan, Montana, Colorado, and the SW - and it did it well.

Well, my daughter made a traveling soccer team in which all her games would be across the SW, so we knew an upgrade in road comfort was in order, and the GX hunt began. We will be road tripping to NV, UT, NM, AZ, TX, and potentially more. Ulterior motive, in a few years time, when we are done traveling the desert, overlanding mods on the GX will come. If I get smurfy on building it up before then, I'll start the thread. I do love the low-key ability of my lightly built 4Runner, so slight lift (1, maybe 2" tops), tall skinny 32x10's, and then overlanding goodies will likely be my jam.

We picked up a mint 2010 GX Base, with most of the Premium upgrades (comfort, convenience, preferred packages, cross bars, tow hitch, remote start, nav) plus brand spanking new Nokian's. It is at 65k miles, and immaculate service records (with all the recalls done). We have been looking for some time across the country for the right one, and it popped up for us 6 hours away. Easy Decision.

So howdy to all the GX folks out there, thank you for showing all us newb's what you've done. Have fun welcoming another soccer taxi to the club.

Oh, by the way, the new GX is green :D

Welcome to the club!

Nothing wrong with the soccer hauler life, it’s necessary. Based on the fact that you sold the 4Runner sleeper capable rig and now have the GX…it’d seem only a matter of time before this one becomes that ones replacement and gets a few tasteful treatments. Either way, still have some GX love from us here!

Cheers!

Although, a soccer hauler with 34" tires, steel bumpers and a snorkel would be cooler!!
Welcome to the forum!
Not everything on here is about bigger and better. There's lots of maintenance and repair knowledge here also!
Enjoy!

I mean, it's just more practical to have those mods:

- Front bumper with hoops: hang the dirty soccer outfits to dry after a rainy game plus the added benefit of spending less time in the body shop for any little front end hits on animals or minivans
- Snorkel means less intake filter maintenance, which is good because you're going to have no time for maintenance while running the kiddos around constantly
- 34's means you have to slow down less for rough roads, speed bumps and the pesky school zones, expediting your errand runs, freeing up more time for the fam

It's just facts, in no way could one argue against the benefits.

Thanks guys, I think I'm picking up what you're putting down - this may become the build tread: SoccerCruiser! First mod: team stickers, maybe an outdoor shower to hose off sweaty kids before getting back in the ride . We did get lucky - this thing popped up on Craigslist after searching Autotrader/Cargurus/interwebs for a few months and I texted my wife it was the unicorn. We would have preferred sepia interior, parchment was our lowest choice. But after a few months this summer with black interior in her subaru, my wife decided maybe white wouldn't be that bad.

Seriously though, a bumper is tempting, every car I've owned I've tagged wildlife; moose, deer... And I really like the thought of getting the spare on the bumper somehow or another. Really struggling with suspension though, I feel like an extra 1" or so is all I'll want, so just new shocks and stock springs??? I loved the 4Runner with Bilsteins and FJ Cruiser Springs (and so did the fam, it rides great). Oh well, I do have time to stew on it. All in all, I think overlander build is the way we will go with this going forward.

The team stickers would be a great mod! That alone should allow you to traverse almost any rock garden or mud pit!
As for steel bumpers, wait until you hit something and have insurance pay for it! (As long as you don't total your vehicle hitting it! o_O)
If all you want is about one inch of lift and you never have any dreams or aspirations of off roading, then just do spacers. Cheap, easy and you'll keep the factory ride.
I personally don't suggest them especially if off roading because the idea behind taller suspension and shocks is more wheel travel, but it sounds like that's not an issue with your plans.

r2m, totally get where you are coming from (especially on the bumpers), and for right now, most of the driving will be highway, camping, and raft put ins. I'm a big believer in the stock capabilities of these rigs, and a boost to get them over the top can't hurt. Eventually, we will hit more than just fire roads, so improved shocks/struts or so with some 32's I'm thinking should be adequate (to start). And I do know that I could be 100% wrong there too! I had my lightly built 4runner in some fun places, just take it slow and careful.

Sounds like a sensible plan.
Agree with everything you've stated! Build to your own expectations and not anyone else's!
We just like to have some fun around here when we're not on a trail! 😁

Nice and welcome!
1st things first: pull off the running boards, you'll see. 😈
2nd: tires, even if it's mostly highway and pavement. The comfort and security on camping trips is immeasurable

I've been moderately wheeling in SE Utah on spacers for 3 years, so far so good. I just wanted a little more clearance up front, the 0.75" strut-top spacer gave me that. I investigated and understand the cost-benefit and feel confident that a sub 1" spacer (ergo sub 2" lift) is okay with the stock shocks' compensatory measures built in. I just recently did a 0.5" airbag spacer to the rear and regained some rake and have greater clearance overall (all 4 corners), while retaining auto-levelling aribags AND the 1.6" rear lift for HI setting. (I think your premium has coils in back though, right?)..

At any rate, for your purposes, I would be fine recommending a spacer for the front. Upsize tire gains a little more clearance and MUCH confidence off tarmac (for the light-moderate trails/roads) for camping...

props, welcome, and have fun (in comfort)!!!!
