Just got under my newly purchased '23 GX460 to REALLY check things out. Bought from an individual with 24,500 miles. Looked pristine when I first inspected. I must say I just looked for oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, rust, etc. With only 24K I never even considered looking at the shocks. Well, last night I was changing my oil and noticed the right front shock was covered in black oily gunk on the body and the coil. CV boots are still intact. I am assuming I have a bad shock?

I know I have a 48 month/50K mile basic warranty. Are shocks covered under the basic warranty with only 24K?

They are most likely not covered. Since its on the right side, good news is it is probably not KDSS fluid.

You'd need to review the warranty coverage book for exclusions. A shock could very well be considered a "wear" item, however I will say that only 24K on a OEM Toyota shock is pathetic. They should last 75K plus before blowing out.

Feel blessed that, that's the only thing oil is showing from!
If you find it's not covered by warranty, I'd suggest all new shocks, not just the one.
And to add to that, do you have any plans/aspirations for off road adventures, either mild or wild, camping, family road trips, etc.? If so, this would also be a good opportunity to upgrade your suspension for heavier loads. Most folks have found that aftermarket suspension upgrades with a taller tire (sidewall) provide an even better ride.
Food for thought.

I’m an old man that can barely get in and out of it. LOL
