I think it would be more economical to replace the the whole chunk. You would be able to offset some of the cost by selling the head off the current motor and gain a few spare parts in the process.
The 2F offered by @35inchoverdrive is a later 2F with some nice improvements over the 78 2F.
This would be a decent project for the club, (should you decide to join us) and an engine is the kind of job where you can do the job for the cost of parts with the right people and equipment.

I rebuilt a 2F last year and it was around 1200 in machine work and 3k in parts if my memory is correct. That was with reusing the crank and turning it and getting the cam reground. The bores just needed a light hone so the pistons were still salvageable as well. Boring the block and new pistons would have been really expensive.

Ryan - machine work sounds right but 3k in parts is way more than I thought. Thanks for the info.

Stump - direct swap it is. I did that several years ago and it was pretty inexpensive as you said. I'm planning to come to the meeting next Wednesday, at minimum to say thanks in person for the help so far.

Tulax17, if you want to practice a swap you can come up to Winchester and help with mine!
;) ;););););)

2X on 35overdrive's is a good deal.

Don't even play like your ready for this.

I'm not but the F is.
There was a huge cloud of smoke behind me at Chaose ORP when I go down steep hills! Should have seen the HEEP that had to follow me! :) :) I could not see him throw the blue smoke!!
Bad enough some one asked if I blew it up!

Replacing a F with a 2Fprity straight forward. Probably try and wait till next year. I want to reseal it first and I'm prity lazy!

Looks to me like you're pretty busy... not lazy. But that's your fault for having athletic girls. I hope mine are the same way.
At least buy the gasket kit. Then you're 1/2 way there. SOR actually had decent prices for a 2F gasket kit, last time I checked. The nice thing about having a spare motor out is that you can spend an hour here and there and your done before you know it.

Ya the girls keep me and my wife running 3-4 games a week! But we love it hope to keep them out of trouble.
Ya it's nice having an extra. I've started peeping but do not want to tear it down to far without having the time to work on it. It's in the car port with the dirt floor (rust comes quick.) I'm going to move it in the garage next weekend and start tearing into it.

the valves should be good. The head was rebuilt recently. The block was original. I often park it for 2-3 wks at a time and have never noticed oil spots so I figure burning. Plus the plugs are fouled with not many miles.

Today I refilled with oil. No visible leaks. Starter audibly engages but can't move the flywheel. I put in 4th and was able to move it a few feet with help from a friend and downhill slope, but very difficult. I was rocking it back and forth to get it to move a half foot at a time. It's locked up on something. While moving the oil fill cap was off and first rocker arm was moving. Plugs were in so that probably made it a bit harder.

I'm fairly settled that the block needs to come out (oil consumption, sounds before stopping, and currently not moving. The question is replace full engine or have that block rebuilt. If I do the pull/install, does anyone know approx cost of parts and machine work of having the block rebuilt?

I have a receipt from 2010 to remove original 2F, have it rebuilt by Rockville Ring and Pinion, and reinstalled. Total cost $3600.

Good info. That's a better price than I've seen elsewhere, although mine could be different depending on damage. If I head towards a rebuild I'll check out that shop. Their website looks good; specializing in motors and support the DIY customers.

Have you figured out what you're going to do yet? Reason I ask is I've got a 2f sitting on a chassis that turns freely if you're interested in looking at it. It's been sitting ran good when parked.

What year is this 2F?

Glad to hear you found one
