So I reinstalled the head after getting it rebuilt with all new valves and bolted everything back on. THe truck idles great and runs well on flat ground. The problem is on up hills the truck will sputter and not go above 1500rpm or so. I know I should have rebuilt the carb while it was off but I didnt so thats the first things im going to try. is there anything else I should be looking for? its an 84 fj60 by the way.

why would the truck only be affected when going up hill? I would think a fuel filter would cause this all the time not just on up hills.
'Cause going uphill you put your foot into it and fuel demand is higher. Float bowl gets low and the sputtering starts...

Pighead is correct. There are other possibilities but changing out the fuel filter is so cheap, easy, and necessary that you might as well start there and there is a good chance it will fix the problem.

well its not the fuel filter. I put a new one in this evening and ran down to the store to grab a few things and sure enough on the way back up the hill it died on me. The truck is running really well while on flat ground. The wierd thing is that I made it about half way up the hill before anything started to happen. I noticed that the fuel level in the sight glass really high. It covers the hole window. could this have an affect?

so it looks lik the carb has to come back off for a rebuild. any other suggestions while I messing around in there?
You can adjust the float with the carb still installed. You just have to pull the top piece off and adjust the tabs on the float. You have a FSM or a copy? It goes over how to adjust it in there. A fuel issue is the likely cause of it stalling up the hill. I would start with the float.

Ive got an FSM. Ill look at the float adustment when I get home tonight. thanks for the help.
