Mot (or anyone), can you please post the overhead console...

...parts list, ie the exploded diagram from the overseas Toy parts catalogue?

I have a friend visiting South Africa and he's going to see about bringing the console back for me, but I would like to show him what the external compass sending-unit looks like.

Thanks!

Here is a pic of Boston Manglers. I want one too. Let me know if he can get two.

I don't need a picture of the unit; I need a photo of the exploded psrts list so I can identify the ancilliary parts required to make the compass work.

The one posted has the sunroof controls on it, so I would guess it's for the sun roof model.

Yup, the depth of field of the photo and the sunvisors with the ears (non JDM) tricked me.

That unit actually fits around the existing control console.

He also had to get different sun visors, without the dog-ears.

Well, excuse the **** out of me.

T'ain't no big thang.

Anyone have the exploded parts diagram?

IronYuppy, this is OT, but your new display pic is the best.

There is a post here someplace, I think from Dan, where is holding the little magnetic do hickey that makes the compass work. There is a post by prosett (?) with the console number.

I haven't seen any post on the additional OEM components. IIRC Dan fabricated the wiring harness and other thingies

Really, Mot and get you everything you need and if you ship it by sea it won't cost too much.

Thanks. Yeah, I know I could get it through Mot, and I will get any missing pieces through him (if possible), but if i can get it all through my friend (no dealer mark-up, no shipping), that would be best.

It is an absolute pain in the ass to install and it is not even close to worth the effort. I would never do it again.

Do the African ones come with compass or aux fuel gauge?

Here's mine,

It's pretty much useless; too close and at a bad angle to see while driving. I haven't even bothered to calibrate it.

To stay on topic, if we can't talk you out of this, I'll see what I can find for a parts listing...

Also, G&S may have one from Nick's HDJ81 but don't know if it survived the roll.

There have been stupider things than this that nobody's been able to talk me out of! :D

To be honest, this would be way more appealing if it had been the altimeter/inclinometer set-up the old 4Runner SR5s had. I already have a compass.

A little late in checking in any there's no work for me to do here.:)

Here are the diagrams from the parts catalogue and a pic of the magnetic field sensor that is necessary to run the compass.

Luc from France has posted a copy from his catalogue displaying a few variations of meters available: compass/altimeter, compass/subtank, subtank/altimeter, etc...

I'm waiting to receive a couple of them.;)

As Dan said, it's probably not worth all the trouble if you're doing the compass thingy. I have it in my rig, but I almost never use it. I use the one on my navigation a lot more.

So the mag field sensor is the part that attaches in the centre of the roof?

So what I'm picturing here is that the console plugs into the existing overhead wiring harness, and there's another (already present?) wiring harness that runs from the compass to the sending unit?

Does that mean the PITA part is dropping the headliner, mounting the sensor, and running the new harness?

Just an idea, but would it be worthwhile to take one of the older 4Runner/pickup altimeter/clinometer gauges and make a custom housing to sit either on the dash or overhead? It obviously doesn't have a compass, but if someone is running GPS then it wouldn't matter anyway.

I've taken the old Toyota Tercel 4x4 wagon clinometers and put them in pickup/4runners before. The housing is a different shape, but it can be trimmed to fit. The downside to the Tercel gauges is there's a dummy 4wd light instead of the altimeter. However, I think a clever person might be able to take the 4wd out and put a different gauge in it.

Nope, nada. You have to build your own.

Two questions, then:

1) do youmean there's no harness from anywhere to the area near the mirror? Couldn't you just draw power from the + lead to the sunroof control switches?

2) Why does the mag field sensor have to be in the middle of the roof? I understand how being near metal could distort the compass reading, but why couldn't the sensor mount somewhere relatively far away from metal, ie the underside of the centre console lid, or atop a wooden cargo box?
