There is a similar thread in both the 100 and 200 Classifieds Sections, makes sense here too. These trucks are changing hands at a rapid rate these days, having consolidated live market data is a nice thing for both buyers and sellers.

If you have recently bought or sold an 80 series and are comfortable sharing the details, post it here.

So the previous '94 went for $39,750 + fees yesterday.

Here's the cleanest 80 that I've seen on BAT and makes the $136k one a few weeks ago look used. Already at $20k with 6 days left. 1995 Fully locked, 174k miles. This one will break some records for the higher mileage crowd.

Perhaps someone who knows someone at toyota could send this news out so they'd realize that there is a market for a more simple, durable, solid axle front suspension SUV. Imagine a crew cab V8 tundra sold as Cab and chasis with a solid axle front end, air bag suspension, with manual shift TC without center diff, manual hubs, manual seats, and hose washable interior. Fit whatever you want on the back end. Pump up the bags for heavy load work truck such as a flat bed car hauler etc. People could adapt it to a wide variety of work vehicles or whatever off road play toy they want to make. They could add a diesel option whenever they figure out a light medium truck diesel to offer for the US market.

I've had a look through classifieds but couldn't find any 40th anniversary editions lately and a search pulled nothing on sales.
I have a 97' with triple lockers in sage pearl, got 330k on the clock. Atlanta truck with no rust on it. Paint fading on hood, head gasket done, all rubber pipes replaced, PHH, front seat leathers redone, about to do the front axle rebuild with new birfields, slee extender brake lines, new front calipers, etc. Everything works and runs because it's my DD and the lockers flash on the dash because I haven't gotten around to it yet as it don't interfere with my DD. Got full ATL Toyota service history and new bfg ko2 305/70r16 tires.
I'll post photos up once I get it listed in the classified.
I was thinking $15k but unsure about the market?

I think this is the right place to ask. I'm currently shopping/browsing for an 80 series. I'm not looking to flip the truck. Absolutely do not want to deal with rust.
I tried to buy a 80 series on here, but that deal fell thru. Tried for a 1997 just the other day (Facebook marketplace), but there were to many unanswered questions for me to feel comfortable to pull the trigger.

Is now a bad time to buy a decent 80 series? It seems like when i waited in the past, the price never really comes back down. Can someone break down what price i should expect to pay for the different levels of 80 series? How much does 3x factory lock add to it (wouldn't ARB lockers be just as good). I'm not locking for a collectors condition. I'm not against modifications that serve a purpose.

Is the time of finding 'inexpensive' 80 series over (at least for the ones that aren't rusted out or un-maintained).

Take the Sand colored 80 series for sale in the classifieds, is that a good deal at $23.5k (price, when i last checked). For a novice like me, it seems an ok deal.

buckle up------seems like prices have exploded in the last 12 months........bring a trailer has a sumary of all the FJ80 sold. I think you can still find good ones on Craigslist and local sources, but the mint ones are getting hard to find.
check this out --- summary dots are clickable for the detail on the sold ones

Correct. Decent to Good drivers are $15k-$25 depending on condition, rust, and correct mods. Expect mid 200's in mileage, adding lockers if desired and some imperfections, just choose the ones you can live with or correct. Either way budget another $5k+ for things you want or need.

Finding one for less usually requires luck, effort, and/or alot of corrective measures/investment afterwards!

As much as it pains us to realize these price levels, it isn't out of bounds. Folks are spending $20k -$30k on SXS's and you can't or shouldn't drive those to work or camping!

Good luck, they are great rigs if you are ok with the slow lane, 12 mpg, and the coolest truck in the parking lot!

I'll chime in- I bought my 1997 40AE for the listed price of $10k in February 2021. It had 285k miles and unlocked. I ended doing a full new paint job, full new interior (Including suede headliner), full new suspension (Stock height), wheels/tires, motor service, axle service w/ birfs (selling dealer didn't do it right).. overall a really comprehensive frame on restoration. I'm into it for ~$45k now. I've got plans for a new motor at some point but it runs so good as is. I can't think of any other SUV I'd rather drive for $50k. Really cool rig and everywhere I go someone wants to chat about it.. It's a real modern classic and happy I was able to save this one.

I could see myself in a 80, but not for the prices they're asking now............Probably the cheapest way to go if you can deal with right hand drive and have the time would be to fly to Japan and buy one from a used car lot that is 24 years old with a JCI about to expire or expired. Price is actually lower on the vehicles less than 25 years old because they cannot auction them to be exported to the US. Pay to have it stored and exported when it reaches 25 years.......I might do this one day If I want to sell my BJ73 for something more comfortable, but still a LC..................Having a car that you like to drive for most occasions that doesn't depreciate, but goes up in value is quite justifiable/practical/and unique.

Its hard to get a read on value for these trucks. I've had two people wanting to buy mine, but have no idea the right price for it. I'd love to get fellow Mudders' perspective:

1997 LX450
191K miles, factory triple locked
Baselined, along with a new battery, OEM alternator, and new Toyota Red coolant
Paint is ok, but not fading or peeling (Its black)
Dobinson lift, slee caster plates, IPOR belly pan, 4X4Labs rear bumper, WKOR sliders and some Witts End goodies inside.

Its a strong running truck with no issues. A/C may need some attention since on super hot days it can't keep up.

Thoughts? I'm not looking to sell for the hell of it, but I also don't want to let it go (if I sell) for lower than its worth in this market).

Where is the truck from? Any rust? Interior in decent shape? Body in decent shape, dents dings? Sounds like 20 to 25k or more if it's really nice.

$30k maybe more if you have the patience to put it on BAT. No rust, baselined, and non fading original paint go a long way these days. My suggestion would be to get the A/C 100%, get the truck paint corrected and take good pictures. Should be gone within a week.

It’s a Lexus and they don’t usually go as high as those with the land cruiser badge.
I’m thinking more in the $15k range

$15k? Lol give me a break. This guy is asking for help to determine the value on his truck and you choose to tell him that his truck is worth half of what it’s worth. Do you mind me asking what you have to gain in misleading a fellow owner? Is it ignorance or are you purposefully trying to mislead him?

You do realize that there have been multiple recent proven sales of 80’s selling for $50k, $60k, $80k, and the 1k mile truck selling for $130k. Is his truck going to sell for that much? No, but to say that these sales have no effect on the sale prices of normal examples is just plain stupid. Rising tides raise all ships. This is true for every other collectible car. What makes you think the 80 series is the exception?

You’re funny. I bet you’re super fun at parties.

Ignorance it is! When you’re ready to sell, I’ve got a stack of 150 $100 bills waiting for you. Lmk 😉
Dude, go stroke out on the jeep forum or elsewhere. You clearly didn't read my post and the others above mine well enough. You've done this before too. You take things personally on the internet and throw temper tantrums like a child. You cite pristine examples of the Land Cruiser on BaT selling for exorbitant prices. Those are not comparable to what the OP described. Still, you're entitled to YOUR opinion and so am I. Good luck selling an LX450 for $30K will 200k on the clock and tired paint and whatever else we can't determine from the OPs post.

I'm done with you and your ignorant rants. Apologies to the forum for the derail; now back to cruisers.

You should take a long deep breath and ask yourself if you’re the pot calling the kettle black. It’s crazy how much the saying is applying to you right now. Almost as if it was made for describing someone like you... 😂

Anyways... best of luck to you @91TB78 in selling your truck. I hope you get the absolute most you can get for it and that the money from the sale benefits the life of you and yours. Although I do urge you to reconsider! They’re some of the best vehicles out there and finding a suitable replacement outside of another 80 series will not be easy.

X2
The triple lock sets them apart especially on an LX450(rare). 25k is where I would value it at and the mods and 315 is a nice bonus.

Have to realize too that there are regional differences to pricing. In Honolulu, these things are probably not worth what they would be in say California or the Southwest. My wife is from Manoa and I've visited there many times, cant imagine the demand would be as high there for one of these dinosaur trucks.
