For the past two mornings now, I've been hearing this noise. It sounds like a doorhinge that needs to be oiled (my best description). I only hear it when I turn the steering wheel of the car and then the noise disappears when it reaches the normal operating temperature.

Buddy of mine says I'm out of power steering fluid, but I checked it and it was still full of PS fluid.

Don't know what's causing it because the car is not leaking anything and I sure would like to stop this small problem before it turns itself into a big one later on.

Any help would be great.

On cold mornings the back of my steering wheel on my old 93 LC would lightly rub against the column cover behind it, resulting in kind of a dry scraping sound as the wheel was turned. Not exactly a door hinge, but possible. No fix I was aware of; I attributed it to an old plastic part disfiguring in the sunlight.

Hope it's nothing more than that.

It would help to know the year of your truck...Is the sound coming from the steering column?

If your truck is 95 or up my guess is it is the clock spring....if you have a pre 95, and it is coming from the same place it sound like the horn contact pin is rubbing on the contact ring on the back of the steering wheel and it needs to be greased.

Instructions from C-Dan from a simple search:

In order to do a proper job you will need to remove the steering wheel. This will require removal of the horn pad to expose the retaining nut. Straighten out the front wheels and center the steering wheel so you will not have to guess where it goes when you put it back on.

Remove the horn pad (screws from the back)

Grip the wheel and loosen the nut with a socket/rachet. DO NOT let the column lock hold the wheel while you loosen the nut, you will fawk up the lock and you will need to give me some of your money.... On seond thought do let the lock.......NEVERMIND

after the nut is loose, back it off til there are a couple threads still engaged.(very important step)

Grasp the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and rock it in and out as you pull it toward you.

You left the nut on so the wheel does not smack you in the mellon when it come loose...

Next remove the nut and wheel. Clean the old grease off of the back of the contact ring on the wheel and re-grease it with wheel bearing grease.

re-assemble things and torque the nut to 25 lbft..

IMPORTANT FOOT NOTE:

This only applies to vehicles WITHOUT a driver side airbag..............

from what you describe, sounds like this is a high pitched sound, and not only when you have the wheel fully turned, correct? If so, then it is probably not the usual PS groan due to old fluid etc, which is probably what your friend was referring to...

Is it a constant sound when the wheel is turned or just occasional? There's several of the trucks in our club that have a funny sound. If its a little cold, when you turn the wheel left it squeeks, but not right and not when it's warm out.

One guy finally got fed up with it and had it looked at. Guess there's a spiral cable in the column that causes it, $250 for a new cable plus an hour of labor.

It's a 92 FJ80. I'll find out today if the sound is heard from the outside because I know I can hear it from the inside.

I can hear the noise from the outside of the car as well. Don't know what it is, but it sure is getting annoying. Goes away after the car is warm though.

What to do from here??
