I'm moving West and I'll I'm bringing is my hundy with what I can fit in it. I'm looking to make my cross country trip an adventure. I will be leaving NC in December and trying to plan a fun route across the country instead of the boring I40 or I10 routes. I've never been to Colorado was thinking about heading up that way, but wasn't sure how much snow that I would encounter. Any suggestions? Tips? Ideas? Thanks ahead of time.

I'd take 40 and turn left at Los Angeles. 40 is more interesting than the 10.

It will be winter so I'd have a back up plan that involves going as far south as possible (I-10) if there's a big storm.

Enjoy your trip!

I've driven 40 several times, I want to try something new! Might take part of 80.

80 is cool but it's going to be winter. If the weather is good 80 will work but you risk serious delays if there's a storm.

If you have great weather, you could take 70 to Utah, Pick up US50 (best drive of any main road), cross Nevada, pick up 395 (another great drive) in Reno and head south.

That would take you through Denver, Just north of Moab, Great Basin, Eastern Sierra and just west of Death Valley.

I'd go visit the Land Cruiser museum in Salt Lake City!

@UltraFJ40 that link works and that route is very similar to what I was thinking. I had looked going up into MO/KS never been to either state. I would pretty much take I40 then head North in OK. hmmm thank you sir!

Maybe something like this? This would depend a lot on the weather.

You are most welcome. I'd also consider Amarillo then up 87/287 through the Oklahoma panhandle then into La Junta and Rocky Ford Colorado. That would put you in Pueblo, CO and it's nice back roads from there. Not much to see from Amarillo to La Junta but they do have some good local restaurants. That might save you from going all the way to Denver and instead you could head due southwest through Durango and into southern Utah.

Whoa, that far North in December, you're likely to see some snow storms. I think I'd just tease the edge a little. Northern New Mexico is cool as well.

There is a friend(s) I want to see in Denver area. Maybe go to Denver then cut over to Grand Junction down into Utah so I don't go so far North. Thanks for information. I do like Amarillo, the big Texan restaurant on I40 drink beer out of a plastic cowboy boot!

Denver to Grand Junction is a nice drive. If you go that route, make sure to visit Zion Nat'l Park in Southern Utah. You could also stop at Woody's place for a cold beer and some Wisconsin cheese. I think he's about 20 miles or so from Zion. It's a really beautiful place and worth the visit.

Also just about an hour or two west is the Valley of Fire Nat'l Park in Nevada which is also a pretty place to visit.

Kind of like this route (there are so many!) I could check weather and if bad just skip going North.

Who is woody? is that a mythical creature or something?

That drive from Salt lake City to Cali is rather uninteresting to me, I'd bend it south at SLC and go down 15 into St george's area. Others may have a different opinion so take it for what it is.

Southern Utah is fantastic if you've never seen it. Hopefully others will chime in to give you more perspective on the route.

S/F jarhead.

OOH RAH!! Land Nav was always my favorite!! I agree with you on skipping SLC, I think I will head South as you suggested. I'm skipping Vegas and head over to Death Valley then over to 395. I'll stop bugging you @UltraFJ40

No worries my friend, an adventure is always fun to see even if you're not part of it. I'm actually excited for you, it sounds like a good time.

Take plenty of pics and post em up please.

Getting a few last minute things fixed at Toyota before heading out this weekend. Looking forward to the adventure. Follow me on Instagram and FB at Circle L Overland if you’d like
