i bought a 01 LX last week and haven't taken delivery yet but during the times that I drove the truck I noticed the sound system sounds like crap. The sub doesn't work and the other speakers in the truck aren't very loud. I'm considering replacing the stock radio and the sub,but I am going to remove the front passenger seat and see if I can find anything wrong with the amp. Is this a common problem? Any hints from the seasoned pros?

I'm not sure about common problems with the amp or sub. I replaced and upgraded the entire system in my 01 LX. I posted details of the work in the build thread in my signature. I also still have some of the old parts available. My system was not a Mark Levinson though.

I bet once you get into them all the surrounds are gone. It will cost you about $100 to foam the speakers and they will come to live. I would try that first.

Would it be better to just replace the speaker or to refoam them?

Here is a comparison between a decent Alpine 6.5 vs the JBL in the front doors.

I wil say I was impressed in the factory speakers once I saw them out of the truck..

I ordered the surrounds rather than add these Alpines... Will sound great.

I'll write it up after they are updated.

I re-foamed the sub cone a few months ago & it sounds like new (the original surround EPDM foam had seriously deteriorated so much that there were large visible gaps between the cone & the frame, although the cone itself was still rigidly attached to the magnet) it was making that "whopping" noise at mid-volume and terribly distorted at higher levels). I elected to replace all 4 door speakers with equivalent impedance 3-ways as the foam surround replacement kit was almost as expensive.

If you intend to replace the speaker cone surround foam (the flexible membrane, not the foam "cushion" ring that sits between the face of the speaker frame & the door mounting surfaces, which simply dampen chassis vibration) make certain you accurately measure the inner & outer OEM speaker surround diameters & order the correct size(s)
