man, if that thing is OK, that is downright a steal...

How could that go for so cheap? no reserve or anything. I am sure they sell for over 80k new. only 4 yrs old and 12, thats a steal.

LK100, I agree with you. That's the reason I didn't figure out an ABSOLUTE way to make sure I didn't oversleep and miss bidding. First, the Seller had cancelled some earlier bids due to an "Error in listing" (I figured he had just noticed he put the car for sale in the "Parts and Accessories" section of eBay Motors) But then I noticed that, although the top bid was back to $2000, it was still being offered for sale with no reserve. Finally, with only 4+ hours to go, the car was still at $6100. I put in a bid of $9000 and went to sleep. I figured if I got it, I got it.

If something sounds too good to be true,...............

Call me skeptical, but it all just didn't add up. That, and the fact that it's a good 2000 miles from me, I'm not altogether sad I missed it (does that sound like "Please don't throw me in that briar patch???)

that sale will not go through. no way. no how. not a chance. ebay makes it too easy for a seller to slip out of a deal.

i totally agree the sale is bogus i actually tried to get a 97 lx 450 some time back and only 2 of us were bidding and then the dealership which had the truck on ebay started to bid and then said there was a winning bid for about 15k so i drove by the dealership several times a the truck was there for about 3 weeks and each time i stopped in they said it was sold but they sell it to me for 17,500. the guy probably then took it to an auction or some thing i dont trust them at all with big ticket items my wife has bought lots of stuff but nothing over $200

Most car transaction are done outside of ebay. They negotiate the price and just put a very high bid for the buyer to seal the deal. $12,100 just mean the 2nd person highest bidder are $12,000. That way the seller save a bunch of money on ebay comission. Ebay like that also because it makes the market looks very atractive for potential buyer.

I know because I bought my 99 of ebay and the winning bid only show $10,500 although I paid a lot more than that.

that truck is worth at least 25K I would think. Yup, nobody would take a 13K loss like that, even if it means a bad feedback...

curious, can you clarify a bit what you meant in the last sentence?

I mean the closing bid on my truck only show $10,500 as the winning bidder. That was becaue the next highest bidder only bid up to $10,400. I negotiate the price outside of ebay and the seller put my buying price as my max bid. I still have to pay my negotiated price regardless what is shown as the winning bid.

Ok, but what if you hadn't talked to them, if you just bid at the last minute. Whoever is top bidder still gets the vehicle, unless ofcourse the dealer gets out of it claiming it was previously sold, etc. I think that'd be a slippery slope for a dealer, since if you had e-mails and such proving what was happening, Ebay would screw them, and you would get the vehicle for that price...but alot of hassle just to piss someone off...

I still don't get this. The seller has to ability to set what the high bid shows at on ebay? It's not automatically done by the system?

Bidding only goes up in increments, in this case, $100. Even if Augie had bid $30k, it would still only show $10,500 since the other bidder only bid $10,400. Sounds like the seller had a reserve price that was not met and therefore had no obligation to sell at the $10,500. So Augie negotiated outside of eBay. Clear?

And if someone else had come along and bid $30,100, the dealer would have told Augie tough luck, their agreement wasn't binding. So, the way it works out, the dealer has a sale, but if someone comes along higher, the dealer makes more money.

Very true the scenario mentioned above could happen.
At that time the small dealer that deal with me ask me to put my buying price and then he ended the bidding early and I still do not have to commit except the $100 non returnable deposit. The one mentioned above did not close the bid early but who knows how much the buyer put as the max bid. The seller might not know how to end the bidding early, so they just put very high maximum price on it.

In my limited experience with Ebay, I really believe they don't give a rats ass! I had to threaten a guy with legal action, as in I was reporting him to federal law-enforcement, to get him to hold up his end of the bargain. Prior to that I had contacted Ebay and Paypal, all they would do was "document", whatever. I'm sure that really makes a difference!

That deal for 12K still smells like a con!

I bought an ATV on ebay. The guy that I bought it from had me wire $3400 to him and then sort of dissapeared for about two weeks. Before wiring the money, I checked feedback and was able to contact some of the others that had bought ATVs from him. It all looked good. Well after the week of not being able to get hold of the guy, his phone was disconnected, etc. I went to peoplesearch.com and bought the full deal. Showed everything about him, home, business, age, spouse, neighbors, etc. A surprising amount of information. Now on the second week I started to get pretty worried that I had been scamed. The third week I filed a report here http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp and put all information. I guess the FBI forwards the complaint to the local PD both in the location of the seller and your local PD. This guy lived in CO and I in So Cal. Just so happened that this guy then contacted me and told me his associate had sent it. Still I contacted the shipper and there was no record. He dissapeared again. About a week later I then learned that the ATV had been shipped. About a week or so after the guy had contacted me the sheriff in his town called me and had brought this guy in for questioning and wanted to know if I was satisfied. I knew the ATV was enroute so I told him that it looked like it was going to be OK. The sheriff gave me his numbers and told me to call if I wasnt satisfied. Well the guy then called me mad as hell (second call in 4 weeks) and threatened to sue me for libel, destroy me, etc... That same day my local PD called me to follow up on this.

The ATV did eventually arrive and of course was not as described but I didnt bother with it because it was just too much hassel.

The bottom line is that http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp is VERY effective. If you buy something on ebay it is bound by law and if you want to go through the hassel of bringing the PD into it it is very easy to do.

After my experience, I wont buy anything big on ebay anymore.
