I did the mini box conversion with an FJ60 pump and bracket on my 1980 FJ40. Its been working great, but I want to rebuild/have rebuilt or buy a rebuilt box to get rid of that little bit of play in the wheel. I adjusted the box to get rid of as mich slop as possibe. I'm sure the worm gear is worn. Whats the best route on getting a mini box back into spec? All the rest of my steering system is either new or rebuilt, just trying to get the thing to track straight over uneven surfaces. I understand that 40's will never drive like a modern car, just trying to figure out how to get it the best it can be without spending major $.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hiya,

Try these guys. (west Texas Offroad) I had my box redone by them in the fall and it looks great & they were good. I haven't tried it yet as I am still working on a rebuild.

teraflex

It cost me $150.00 for the rebuild and it took about ten days.

If the worm gear is really worn, get a new one. I doubt that it is worn. Do you know the slop is actually in the box itself or are you guessing?

Hey PinHead, long time no talk to. Its me Randy C, we used to hang out over at the CCOT site, mostly helping guys with smog stuff. The box in my cruiser is the one I bought from you about 5 or 6 years ago. Do you still have your red soft topped 40? Yeah, the only play in the steering is from the box itself. It's only 1" to 1.5" at the steering wheel on either side of center. I've rebuilt the knuckles, replaced all tie rod ends, rebuilt and adjusted the center arm. If I can get the little bit of play in the box out of it, my cruiser will be as good as a 40 can be. I'm not a front end tech by trade, so I'm not sure what wears in these boxes to create the little bit of play on either side of center? Oh yeah, no leaks either.

Any help will be much appreciated
