I have been thinking of installing some military tires on my soa 60. I am starting my engine build right now but saw some good BFG 37x12.5x16.5 mud grip with more aggressive tread that I thought would be good for Florida mud. I know a lot of threads have been written on this. I have the following questions I need help with:
1- will these fit? I am currently running 35 bfgs and they appear to have a lot of room left.
2- is there any down side to using 16.5 diameter rims?
3- what width rim would I use?
4- what backset? It appears the least backset I have found is 4". Do I need to use spacers?
5-are these good tires for traction in the mud?
Thanks,
Ed

1- pics would help determine fit, or maybe you've got a budy with 37" you could borrow for an hour or so. And what gearing have you got? I think with 37s, 4.88 would bring it back to stick ratio.
2- the only downside (if you're using the humvee rim) is that that rim uses 8 lug nuts instead of the land cruiser's 6. And I can't really think of another tire that's 16.5, so you'll be using those badass tires for a while.
3/4- I have 33/12.5 and I run a 9" wide rim with 3.75" BS. They fit really well under the truck, so they don't really fling mud all over the sides. I'm not really sure if it being 4" larger changes anything. So don't take my word for it.
5- they are a badass tire that's for sure, probably my favorite 37", but there are probably better mud tires out there.

I'm not really a tire/rim authority, but I hope this helped a little. Good luck

My friend had military tires on his F350 for awhile. He abandoned them eventually and said they were too heavy for him. I would not put those on my 62 as I believe it would eat my transmission alive. With your manual you should be fine but you may experience really slow accelertion and it may be hard to brake with those.

So the military tires are much heavier then a standard 37" tire. Maybe it would be best for me to save up for some larger bfg km2 or super swampers. The military tires I found are a km2 style tread pattern that I guess is the newer style the military is going with. Thanks, Ed

I don't know if its the tire that's heavier or the double beadlock wheels that add so much weight. I'm planning on buying some this week that are mounted on some aluminum wheels I'm supposed to go get them Sunday.

Coolotisdog: let me know what you think after you get them. Whether you think they are too heavy. I am starting my engine swap to a 6.0 w a 4l80 tranny so I don't think power to push them will be a problem.
Thanks,
Ed

I don't think you will have a hard time getting them to turn with that drivetrain. I have driven Chevy trucks with 37s and a 6.0 lifted and they do okay. But either way I'll let you know.

Are you you interested in NDC tires? They are steel belted and weigh a ton.

Driving: what are NDS tires? These are BFG militarys which look like km2 from a supplier in Georgia. I need to decide quickly as the are selling quick. Ed

Gotcha

The guy here in town that had those tires I was going to buy sold them already. I went and ordered some of those new bfg's off militarytire this morning once they get here and I get them mounted I'll post some a pic

That is the same company I was going to purchase from in ga. Let me know how they work.

Looks like they are the bfg bajas. Supposedly they are a pretty good tire. He said I bought the last set but I'm sure he'll get more soon.

I looking for a good mud tire so let me know what you think as far as weight and aggressiveness in the tread pattern. Thanks, ed
