I've been a member of Keystone from its (new) beginning and even managed to get to some of the early monthly rides. Unfortunately, I've only been able to ride along (thanks Gary and Vince) and I haven't been able to get out to the rides lately. It's good to see the things that are going on in the club and I like seeing what everyone has going. I continue to be impressed with what has been accomplished and its fun to hear of the adventures of others. As some of you may know, I have a '72 40 that is currently my major project, disassembled, and (slowly) getting closer to media blasting the frame. I've been wanting to get out to the rides to actually participate as a driver but have been reluctant to take my pavement princess '14 FJC. While I had a great time off-road with her in Montana and Idaho last summer, she's not ready for prime time (ok, it's me that's not ready). Further, I realize that my 40 is a long term effort (to do it the way I want to do it) so my enabling better half has fully endorsed this pursuit. Ultimately, its time to get things rolling on the next chapter and devote more time to this addiction.

I'll write some more in the future about how things came to be. In the interim, I've attached a few pix of my new to me FZJ80. She's a 1997 (Dec. '96) so not a 40th or a collectors edition. It's a two owner truck that had 115,000 miles on it (it now has a thousand more). Clean Carfax and zero rust. Unfortunately, no factory lockers but I'm ok with that for now. I'll be posting things up looking for some advice. The engine bay is clean and the interior is cleaning up nicely. I have a list of things to fix but nothing of a major mechanical nature. There's evidence of grease splatter near the knuckles, the upper oil pan must've leaked a little and there's gasket maker globbed around that, and I don't like the sound of the starter. I'm guessing there may be an issue there. She ran great over the thousand miles or so from Memphis to Central PA. During the trip home oil pressure was good and temp was consistent. Oil looks clean and the cooling system fluid also looks good. It tracked well and rode better than I expected based upon everything I have read. Thanks for reading.

Oh man, that looks clean! I am so jealous. Are you planning on wheeling it?

Nice clean 80! There's a '94 part out candidate for sale on the CLCC site that has locked axles.

the 80s are awesome.
it defiantly looks saggy though.
I'll need a local guy near me to help check it out... say Lebanon area. Thx Brian.

It definitely is cleaning up nice. For the last 17 years it lived in the suburbs of Memphis. I want to see what she can do, and ease my way into wheeling. So, yes.

Nice 80! Let's buy that 80 with the blown head gasket and you can use the axles!
Hmm... yeah, ever since i saw 76's post it got me to thinking and I was checking it out. I certainly can be talked into that idea. Was hoping to have you and Brian take a look at my 80.

You WILL be impressed with what it can do, even as it sits now. It's so clean it''s almost a shame to wheel it...says the guy who built, and proceeded to beat, a bone stock clean truck with only 77K miles on it:rolleyes:

First thing you want to install is a set of sliders. I have, and love, these: FZJ80 Series Land Cruiser Sliders - 95/97

The pics on the website aren't the best. They have a little kickout at the rear that has saved my rear quarters on multiple occasions.

It would probably be easier to just install some lockers in your current axles.

I agree with Crusha about sliders and lockers! Also about beating the crap out of what was once a nice stock land cruiser...........

Mentioned the leak at the DS knuckle. Checked the diff level and barely any fluid there. Added 2 quarts and the leak seemed to only get worse. So, decided to dive in and do the rebuild.

Learned a lot and had a fun time doing everything . Thanks to the axle FAQ and tons of information available, was able to do this with confidence. I couldn't leave well enough alone and decided to repaint some things, installed new wheel bearings, new trunion bearings, and new pads. Turns out the DS axle seal was junk. In fact, didn't even need a puller. It just fell out. No moly to be found anywhere in the knuckle.

Front axle rebuild...THEE absolutely messiest job to be done on any Toyota. ONE roll of paper towels in photo...such an optimist!
I cannot believe how clean the underside of your truck is, lucky bastid!
Nice job!

:) Agreed. Thx Greg. Final tally was two rolls and a bunch of my finest shop rags. I'm still getting complaints about the smell in the garage. Can't understand what she's talking about... thought everyone liked the smell of old gear oil.

Not so clean today. Took it up over 2nd Mtn. Hawk watch in the rain on Sunday. Found a new issue. There was some clunking on the downhill. Not sure of the correct terminology but the bumper inside the center of the DS spring is not impacting squarely on the base. It's cocked to one side. Thoughts?

radius arm or rear link bushings going/gone south.
the real "fun" is going down the north side of 2nd mt, towards cold spring, in the snow ice....
