Does anyone have pictures and information on the different middle seat hinges that allow better interior space for camping/sleeping....

Thanks...

Scott,

Did you have to remove the seats and/or seat covers to install the hinges?

John

No: pull the plastic cover off the handle, remove the plastic cover from the hinge (one phillips screw I think), four hex bolts attach each hinge to the seat.

The hinges? They aren't bought, just modified stock ones. However, has anybody successfully put in the notches so you can recline in multiple positions? It looks like just a few notches, but they have to be spaced very good because the mechanism needs about 3 or 4 grooves to slip into all at once, so the groove have to be about perfect to work I'd guess.

Thanks....that is kinda cool...

Isn't there a hinge set that allows the seat to fold different too? I remember reading something about that but can't find it!

Yep. Just checked my JDM hinges and they looked identical to the US ones except for the extra pin in the hinge. Unfortunately, the JDM hinges I got are gray in color and I have brown hinges with my oak interior. I guess I will have to do the grinding afterall :(

I looked at that while I had them out. I moonlight as an engineer at a machine shop, have the resources to do it, but it would be very difficult. The one added recline position this mod gives you is nice, don't really need any less reclined positions. Further recline would get weird as the back hinges from a point well above the seat bottoms. If the back laid flat, it would be about 5" higher than the bottom. I think it would hit something before that, would have to look again.

Sleeping area is a goal of mine also. I recently built a platform but took it out due to safety concerns. I'm working on an expanded steel platform that can compress in an accident instead of slicing through the rear seats, and double as a cargo/pet barrier. Unfortunately my wife has plenty of jobs for me if one of mine slows down

Scott, what were your safety concerns?

My brother Doug told me about the trouble they had trying to make a flat trunk lid for a notch-back Camaro when he was a product planner at GM. The lid kept slicing through the passenger compartment in crash tests. They tried giving it break points and weakening it but it never worked out. My oak plywood deck would certainly slice through the rear seats if the rear hatch were pushed in.

And this is what the pin looks like after you grind the end off, as it's falling out of the hinge. Photos courtesy of theLal..

It's a lot easier to cut the pin in the center with a dremel tool and cutoff wheel than is is to grind one end off. Just cut in the smaller diameter portion. No damage is done to the hinge and no touchup or repainting necessary.
