So, I bought a 94 with a popped HG that was driven for an unknown amount of time before the PO parked it for another unknown period of time with water in the oil. I've always been more of a component replacement instead of component repair kinda guy and besides I don't know just how f'd up the internals of this particular engine are so I would rather swap in a good running salvage engine. I was looking for a replacement engine and keep seeing that they are listed for 93-94 or 93-95 vs 95 or 96 and up. Are the long blocks the same with just OBDII electronics being the difference or can the 95 and up engines not be swapped out with the 94 and older? I've searched and not come up with anything that definitely says one way or the other. Any info will be appreciated. Thanx

I think you would at least need the ECU from the 97 if you are switching in both the engine and tranny since it controls the tranny. Don't know about the mounts, or connecting a 97 engine to the a442

Transmission changed in 95.

If I recall, the block for a 95-97 will not connect to the a442 in your 94.

Some, just a few '95 models came with OBDI and an a442f tranny, If you can find one of these it should bolt right up, I thinks...

Hmmm, so it sounds like no one has swapped a 95+ longblock into a 94- truck. I guess I'll just hold out for the proper year engine.

Well...

You might have to change the tranny, ECU, possibly most of the harness are many sensors will have changed, your dash cluster will need to be changed, who knows about some harness OBDII changes under dash...

After all this, you might as well go for a V8 LS1 Swap!
:hhmm:

Yeah, before I go to all the trouble of swapping the newer version of the same expensive hungry hog into the engine bay I'll drop a diesel or V8 in there. I don't understand why there would be so many mechanical differences in longblocks over such a short period of years. Toyota has usually made their engine production runs last for awhile. I guess the 93-94 1FZ was a fluke like the 84 22R but the transmissions, accessories, intake and exhaust parts for that engine were compatible with earlier and later versions of the 22.

Oh well, I'll get to yanking the 1FZ out of the car this weekend and see how f'd up it is.

I have a 94 with a 95 engine, I had to change the manifold and some wiring around, but i have the a442. Guess i got lucky?

That's what I'm looking for, someone who has actually swapped a later model into a 93 or 94. Unfortunately 95 seems to be the bastard year that could have any combination of engine, trans and electronics so I don't know that Titan's experience would have any bearing on a 96 or 97 engine swap. I don't care about the intake, exhaust, wiring or the like since I would just retain the 94's stock bolt on components, I just wonder if the long block (block, internals and head) will exchange directly.

I started investigating the possibilities of either removing the head or pulling the entire engine last night and I think I'll just do a quick HG and hose replacement with the engine in the car. If the head doesn't check out at the machine shop I'll start shopping more for an engine or swap. Thanx to all of you who PM'd me trying to sell me your engines or rigs but I am located in Kansas, I am not going to either coast to pick up a used engine and I'm not going to pay to have one shipped here. Anyone in KS, E. CO, W. MO, or OK who has one to get rid of let me know as I can make these trips in a weekend. Thanx

My PO blew a rod so I had no choice, but I remember now that its either a 96/97, thats all the junkyard had. If I remember correctly, the bell housing never changed, so both transmissions should be interchangeable, unless I have a magical bell housing. Both transmissions were made to work with the same bell housing as far as I know.

Though it has been said that some 95s were OBDI, I can't remember anyone ever posting up that they had a OBDI 95. I do remember someone once posted that their very early 95 model was equipped with OBDII. I have a feeling all 95s were OBDII, though I don't have to bet the cost of an engine on it... ;) I also had never heard that the bell housing mounting had changed...
