NOT MINE (yet). 1978 Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser

This has been tempting me, but not at this price...

Would it be possible to pull the H55f and have it redone, swap into my FJ60, then mate my 4spd to the 2F in the 40?

I know the rust is terrible, but if it could be had for less $, what would your offer be, if any?

Interested to hear others opinions, I sort of want to make this mine....

Thanks for looking!

I can't speak to the mechanical challenges with the trans & motor. The rust on that tub is pretty bad and I'd be concerned about the frame as well. All that said there aren't many things I enjoy more than driving my buddy's FJ40 around Portland, ME in the summer with no top and no doors. Strap a couple surf boards to the top and head down to Higgins. I think he had his redone at Cruiser Solutions in NH. Aqualu tub etc. As far as price I see people asking more for less all the time. I would figure there will be a lot to repair on that truck and keep it running.

I can't pull the add up but my guess is if you don't pull the trigger after posting that on here someone will quickly
A 40 with a 55 is very desirable
New tub
Rust repair and you have a great daily driver
A 55 does not bolt directly to a 40 so that's probably the only reason everyone hasn't done that mod yet

I'd make sure it is actually an H55. not sure what is hanging down behind the skidplate but it does not look like a splitcase transfercase.

For whats there I do not think he is asking a crazy price. Sure it needs some work but it looks like it has almost everything there to get you started and the 5 speed would be sweet if its done correctly.

Photos are at least a year old, so things are looking much worse. Almost everything needs to be redone, or is deficient in some way or another. Has plenty of oil all over the bottom of engine. Says it's the inspection plate gasket, looks to be something on the back side. Has features like: auxiliary long range fuel tank...that's completely rusted through or the rear disc conversion, that needs new rotors. The exhaust (muffler mainly) is a pile of rust. The Weber carb looks ancient, air filter is clogged. It needs so much love, but I still sort of want it.

Just finished an H55F conversion in my 40. Agree with others here make sure it's an H55F can't tell from pictures. The only thing easy is that an H55F mates to the existing bell housing for 2F (check all years) Sure it's possible to remove it and put in a 60 but getting the 40 back to stock means relengthening/shortening drivelines. Removing crossmember and repAiring tranny hump moving tranny/transfer back to original 3 in forward. All this equAls a huge PITA...oh and your 60 needs to be late 84 or newer (oiler provision)

Or you could enjoy a 5 speed 40

Thank you @mtn2roady that's exactly what I needed to know!
