Hello everyone! This years McGrew Campout is officially non official!!!!

JULY 29th, 2016

So with that said here's the scoop....

There are a couple options this year due to mixed feeling with the trail.

Some people are just going to go from Obrien straight to Sourdough Via Fire road and others will participate in the Trail run.

If you wish to go on the TRAIL RUN , we will meet at the Obrien store at 8-830am for a drivers meeting and be at the trail at 9am.

There will be a POTLUCK this year on saturday evening so please bring a dish!!

No Shirts, Sweaters or service this year...

If you plan on going post in the thread and let us know if your going to run the trail or just go straight to camp!!!

P.s. Ty did not go to the meeting

I had a great time last year. I'll be there!

Notice how it's not very "reader friendly"..? All part of the plan to keep people confused.

This is whut i found.

Modifications to Alternative 5
I made the following modifications in the draft ROD to address resource concerns raised in public
comments, and reviewed with my interdisciplinary team and Forest leadership team:
Modification 1: Prohibit motorized use on spurs off the McGrew Trail. This reduces the number
of open, mixed use road miles in alternative 5 by 3.3 miles.
The McGrew Trail will be administratively closed but I will allow recreational motorized use under a
special use permitting system. In order to reduce the risk of the spread of Port-Orford-cedar (POC) root
disease, this area will be subject to the seasonal closures to motorized use in accordance POC EIS and the
application of the associate Port-Orford-cedar risk key. By instituting a permit system, we can monitor
use and effects, inform users about the environmental risks to reduce incidents which impact resources in
the area, provide enforcement to prevent impacts, and still allow continued use of a popular 4x4 high
clearance vehicle trail.
In addition, motorized use will be prohibited on several spurs off the main route. Spur routes off the
McGrew Trail where public motorized use is to be prohibited include: 4402530 (0.3 mi.), 4402550 (0.5
mi.), 4402172 (1.1 mi.) and 4402497 (1.4 mi.) for a total reduction of 3.3 miles.

So if we were to give them X amount of dollars we could acquire a permit (lets say logging) to devastate the land without any repercussion? But driving on a road or this case now a "Trail" that has been there since wagon trail use is now a impact issue.

Frankly, anymore i kind of have to agree with these guys.

If the permit process is timely and not a complete joke, whats the big deal?

Ive been saying it for years really. Trails like mcgrew, Rubicon etc should be gated and protected. People should be allowed to buy passes, like a national park or ski pass or something. I find typically people who will nut up an pay $$$ generally aren't the people fxxxing up access to the rest of us..

We pulled 7+ trash bags out of deer creek area last weekend...... thinking pay access would cut down on the bulls***.

Sorry. I'll get off the soapbox now :flipoff2:

I see what your saying and for the most part I can agree with that. But why should it take more then a month to process permits etc? It just seems like we already pay our dues through our offroad permits and income tax! I do believe it would cut down on the shinanigans that you mentioned for sure.

I agree as well on the people willing to pay are not going to be the ones trashing the area. But the locals will easily find a way around a gate(s) and continue to trash the area on a regular basis. The people the gate will deter are also likely to be the ones who would respect the rules as well. I think they will be getting money from respectable people only to see things continue as they have been unfortunately.

Don't get me wrong. I don't and wont advocate trail/road closures. I pay taxes, they are MY forests to enjoy.

Forestry knows its chesper/easier to close roads than it is to patrol.

People need to police people :(

Anyway this thread is somewhat hijacked.

Regardless i will be at sourdough for the weekend. Good friends and great weather or great friends and good weather. :flipoff2:

This is what ranger Matt was trying to explain to me. He is planning on setting up a 'permit' for day/weekend trips through the trail. Basically it should be a free or cheap way to basically get people the combo and explain to them the environmental impact of the root rot(and keep the honest people honest IMO). Last we chatted he is waiting to hear back on what the outcome is.

Either way we have the permit process started, but I am not holding my breath that it will be granted.

Still planning on meeting you all down at the river for a wonderful time!!

So it has become official. McGrew is closed, looks like all roads to Sourdough will remain open.

So I would plan on NOT having the trail be open for us. That will make it much more simple, unless something changes in the next month.

Matt
