First bump is that my 10-yr old 14B axle project for my 40.

A long time ago while working at a fab job in Kentwood I picked up a C&C 14b from a box van for $100.

I cut the tubes 15” overall and sleeved them. I cut 2 1/2” off the bottom of the housing and hot welded a 3/4” crane beam bottom web chunk on to close it up. The ring gear was ground down to the west pattern and the web plate was ground down until the diff for back in with 1/8-1/4” clearance.

Then it sat in my garage and barn for a long time.

Yesterday I delivered the hubs (already turned down and two lug holes welded shut) to have the 6-on-5.5” yota pattern. I can’t wait to have them back.

These are the inspiration for what I’m doing. I’ll use older 3/4 ton front rotors bolted to the back side remaining stud bosses.

Well, my build stuff is sidelined while I resurrect my daughters 96 4Runner.

I traded a pair of LX from one one of our group to another for a pair of grungy 80 rollers. I plan to blast the old 4Runner wheels two at a time to shoot some wheel paint onto before mounting the new used tires. My daughter sat in the garage with me picking pebbles out of them so I can add some extra bite with my groover.

Making ground with the tear down. It’s going a lot slower than I’d wanted it to.

To get the cam sprockets off I used an idea from the interwebs to wrap the old timing belt on each sprocket and around the idler pulley, and clamped it down.

Right exhaust manifold is finally off. Left side after I pull the intake.

It fought me bad with a few of the studs/nuts.

So yotaparts.com sold me a valve stem seal that only did half the engine. The machine shop called me asking where the other 12 were. I learned that I only ordered half of what I needed based on my perception of the kit. Yotaparts is going to amend this on their site so it doesn’t bite someone else. The heads are fine, cleaned up and just needed a skim. They’ll be done just after I get the remaining seals.

So as I wait, I ran my groover over the used tires I bought. I have a narrower head and blades coming to finish the tires. Two of the wheels are blasted and painted. I found that old rivet style 40 wheels fit on the back as rollers (looks super funny). I’ll hopefully get the other two wheels done this short work week.

Why clean up the wheels? To help them seal better and less work later when we find a clean high mileage 2wd carcass to swap low mileage 4wd drivetrain into.

I finally was able to find a local shop to put the modded tires on the cleaned up wheels and picked them up between work and prepping to head to detroilet for drill.

I spent a lot of early mornings, lunch breaks and after work blasting and painting the wheels to prep them not only to seal well, but to look decent. It’s not powder coat. It’s Duplicolor wheel paint. They will be the nicest looking part of the Crustacean.

One of the most fun parts of this tire work was when I asked the tech how well they balanced. Only one tire needed about 4oz on one side to balance out! When i showed him what the tire looked like originally he was floored about how uniform the mods are. That was fun!

Well sh!t… just before Cara and I left for our vacation I found some rust in a couple of the cylinders. I chose not to ruin the vacation by telling Cara and had a trusted vehicle friend stop by tonight to confirm my fears.

The crustacean is officially dead.

I’ll have to put it up for a parts sale and hope to recoup any of my parts and time efforts.

Now we’re on the search for a decent reliable vehicle for our daughter.

So Cara and I just got back today from a nice sunny warm vacation. Work didn’t want me back for the last half of the day so I did some solidworks homework and went and did a little driveline parts work so I can draw some adapters for homework. My goal is to draw a machinable 2F to R150F Adapter, and maybe even one from the R150 F to a 60 split case.
