What is the maximum tire size without problems on a stock 92 FJ80?
Can I put 33's with no rubbing or problems, and how wide can I go with the stock 15" rims.
I searched, but could only find posts on the newer 93+ LC's
Even with 33's, you are going to hate going uphill with stock gearing. You may want to get a new set of tires/rims, so that you can swap them on when going off road - or get 4.88's.

3FE and 315s will render OD a gear that you use only going downhill. 285s work okay, but you can feel that the engine is not happy on upgrades. 275 is about as large as a 3FE and 4.11s wants to push happily.

Grab a set of 16in pull offs. I got an extra set of Tundra 16in rims for 25 bucks apiece. Then you can run 255/85R16. I've loved the look and the size. The best part is that they're allot lighter than other 33in tires, and not quite as hard to pull up the hills. Just my thoughts.
i run 33 x 12.5 x 15 on my 91'. Up hills sucks but i have no rubbing even when at full turn. Wheeled last weekend with no sway bars and didnt notice any rubbing when suspension flexed.
Thanks everybody, it sounds like I need to find some 33's.
I have 31/10.5r15's on it now and it drives just fine.
How much difference could the 33's make in power and drive-ability?

Steering will not be largely affected, or at least that's the case with mine. Braking may be affected, depending on the weight of the tire, but mine stops fairly well with MT/R's.
The uphills will require a lot of gas, but manageable (or better, if tuned properly as Jon Held mentioned). Freeway driving is great, so long as you do not regularly frequent mountain ascents (Grapevine in CA. as an example).
Just make sure they are properly balanced, so you will not get too much vibrations at ~65-70mph.
EDIT: I went from 35" A/T's on aluminum rims; braking and acceleration was noticeably better with the 33's.
My 92 has 33 10.5's on it. Bought a 1"? spacer kit from manafre for the rear and made some 1 3/8" spacers for the fronts. Stock springs and 296K. Rides great and drives much better than 33 12.5's. Bought mine at Discount Tire.
Running 33x12.5x15's on steelies with no problem on level ground. I have full steering wheel travel without rub. I suspect it could rub with shock compression, although it hasn't happened yet.
Note that it either requires a new speedo gear or your odometer will tick around 10% low. The speedo would be 10% high except that it already reads low by close to that much, so it will now be pretty close. That also lifts it by an inch or so and that's to the axle, not just to the body. Much better traction.
I get lots of comments about how nice it looks. I don't really notice a drop in torque, although science says it's there. It feels just as slow as ever.
