I always meant to post a build thread for this truck and never got around to it. Zack asked for more pics and/or a build thread in the for sale section so here it is. I will post some progression pics and document the build as I finish it up to either sell or keep. Hopefully this will help motivate me to finish it.

The day after I brought it home:

Soon after I bought some slightly used 32's from Eric:

Then I removed the flares, added an ome 850/860 lift with bilsteins and an ARB bumper.

traded the terra grapplers for some 315's and swapped the OME 860's for 863's:

The moment my daughter decided she didn't like wheeling with Daddy anymore. Also when I realized I needed longer travel shocks in the front. I had done a cattywampus style shock drop in the rear so the rear axle would flex like crazy while the stock height billies in the front had no droop available:

I think your next course of action is to adapt the toyota 5.7 + drivetrain (out of new LC)... that would be a "capstone event" :)
I like the 80's and once I get through with some of my other obligations I would like to find a clean one..

I'm done with major mods for a while hopefully. I'm looking forward to a little bit of mild building and restoration on the new truck.

Engine shot, notice the extra master cylinder and the missing smog pump. I noticed the pump was making noise when I diagnosed the alternator so I did the delete with the gates belt from the 3fe list. I have all the parts for a full desmog on the shelf just have never been motivated to get out there and finish it up:

A few years ago the alternator went out. There are two options for the alternator in an fj80, 80 amp and 90 amp. The 80 amp has an external fan and is installed on pretty much every NA fj80. The 90 amp has a sealed case. The mounts for the two are different so they are not interchangeable. When I pulled my old alternator it had a sealed case, so I thought it might actually be a 90 amp. A post in the 80 series forum confirmed(so I thought) that it was indeed a 90 amp so I ordered a new one from toyota of Dallas. The truck was originally sold in Alaska and then driven to Texas so I assumed maybe it was a cold weather option.

Well it turned out that I had an aftermarket 80 amp that looked like a 90 amp. Having the new 90 amp in hand I made a few nips and tucks to the case and voila! - now I have a factory 90 amp alternator:

Chasing some starting issues I replaced the starter contacts, fusible links, ground wires, Larger starter wire, added a factory rebuilt starter, this huge battery:

and still no improvement. Finally I wired a solenoid into the starter logic circuit and haven't had a no start since.

Shiny new waterpump that went out as punishment for buying the new rig:

Maybe a desmog party?! I've ripped most off Lorena but I need to order the capping parts and belt...

If I keep it for sure. If it sells I will just give the box of parts to the new owner. It is time for a valve adjust anyway so it's really not too much more to go. I found a thread once where someone posted napa part numbers for freeze plugs to block the egr ports instead of fabbing a plate. I wish I could find it again, I think it was in a 3fe 40 series conversion thread.

backing up for a minute...

Astute observers might notice that the lift seems lower in the rear with the 37's. Sometime just before getting larger tires I thought it would be a good idea to trade Eric M. my 863 heavies for his 862 stock heights. My thinking was that his truck sat too low with the heavy fronts and mine was too high with the 863s.

Mine actually sat level with the 862s, but I had sized my shocks, sway bar drops, bumpstops, and everything else for the longer springs. So I upgraded to the current OME comps:

this is it:

http://bushrat.hdcruisers.org/3FEconversion.pdf

bottom of page three he lists the sizes for the expansion plugs:

"Disabling the EGR is one area where there are multiple solutions. Others have used threaded
caps and block off plates. My solution was to pound in expansion plugs (Figs. 1 & 2). There
were two I needed. One goes on the fitting on the exhaust manifold (.75”), and the other
goes on the plenum where the EGR valve lived (.829”/21mm). Both are a tight squeeze, but
they fit. This was a clean and cheap solution."

So that brings it to its current state, minus the arb which was sold. I have built a lot of landcruiser stuff since I have owned this truck but most of it is riding around on other people's rigs. I am going to try and build a tube front bumper, some new sliders, maybe a rear bumper but will probably just throw the stock one back on for now and a tire carrier(interior or exterior TBD).
