On my ‘21 Heritage Edition it seems the spare tire is matching the other four (Dunlop Grandtrek), but not the wheel? I would have normally done a 5 tire rotation but I guess it’s not possible considering the spare wheel won’t match.

For those of you with the HE, are you just leaving the spare alone? I’m planning on swapping out the tires soon, would it make sense to just swap out the spare wheel and tire at the same time so I have a matching set of 5?

My understanding is that the spare wheel is not forged but OEM and will successfully substitute if you need it to. You can swap if you would prefer to be complete or avoid the weird look off one 'off' wheel if you did have a spare, but don't need to.

You’ll want it to match if you plan on a 5 tire rotation.

I’m about to replace my tires and was planning on purchasing an extra BBS wheel and doing a 5 tire rotation. After the dealer quoted $7xx (not sure the exact amount, I quit listening after he said “seven hundred”), I said forget it and downsized the tire order to 4.

I’m staying with 285/60R18 so the additional ~$1k for tire and wheel just didn’t make any sense.

Kind of a shame that Toyota didn’t include a matching spare wheel on a $90k flagship vehicle that’s designed to go off-road and actually use the spare.

PabloTx - that’s insane one wheel costs over $700. At that price maybe I won’t be doing a 5 tire rotation.

Check online - Boch Toyota in MA has the BBS wheels for $462 plus about $14 for the matching center cap. Shipping will, of course, vary based on location.

Seems like a reasonable “tax” to pay on your $85k vehicle for a spare rim and tire.

These BBS wheels are a US-only port install. They only install 4. Worked out great for me as i purchased 4 of the original equipment takeoffs for $85 each including free shipping. Work great for my snow tires.

One of my wheels was damaged by DT and just placed an order for a replacement HE wheel. Bought it from Bosh and ended up $498 with tax and ship. They will not ship it right away as they need to fill up a special form and verify ownership. I have been told that I may be required to show a picture of the damage wheel. Will update once I get the order shipped what I was required to show, etc...

Note that the rubber bumpers in the spare tire mounting location have been known to scuff the spare wheel. Might be worth looking into this before risking such a nice wheel being located under there.

I replaced my 5 wheels with RWs today. The matching spare on my LX definitely has a bunch of marks/crud from the bumpers In the spare well. I didnt try to clean them up yet, but looked worse than something that would just wipe off.

My friend bought a LX with ~110k on it and the bumpers had clearly worn through multiple layers of the paint and/or powder coat. Looked like Damascus steel.

Dirt getting embedded in the bumpers definitely doesn’t help things.. it’s possible consistent tire rotations and cleaning them each time could prevent damage. But it is still something to look out for.

Lol, it's a forged 18 inch wheel by BBS. $762 from a dealer is pretty darn cheap, dirt cheap even. $462 is even more ridiculously cheap if you've ever priced out forged wheels.

No toyota isn't going to give a forged wheel as a spare. They get exposed to some harsh elements as a spare. Yeah no way I'd ever put a forged wheel in that location either.

Only car I've ever come across in all my time that has a forged full size spare is Ls460 F. Everything else, youre getting a can of fix a flat or a donut.

“Give” a 5th wheel is playing pretty fast and loose on terminology with a $80k truck. Especially when you are paying a premium for the model with forged wheels. Pretty sure all the standard LX and TLCs come with matching spare (forging not withstanding). And an OEM wheel runs nearly same cost as a BBS if just buying one outright.

I’m betting the majority of these never have the spare tire dropped unless it’s a flat or to replace it when hopelessly dry rotted. Toyota is well aware of that, and gave most of the people that bought a HE what they wanted while not spending another few hundred dollars per unit. Can’t really blame them.

I suppose the main consideration here is whether doing a 5 tire rotation really makes sense or not. If whichever tire is currently the spare is going to get damaged, then it probably makes sense to just stick with a 4 tire rotation, keep the "regular" spare wheel, and only use the spare if a flat occurs. I certainly don't want to damage 5 BBS wheels over time as they get rotated to the spare location. I've seen plenty of discussion of doing 5 tire rotations here on mud, but I think this is the first time I've seen any mention of the spare wheel getting damaged by the bumpers. That's one of the nice things about having the spare stored inside the vehicle, on the rear door (like on a Wrangler or G-wagon), or on a swing away bumper mount.

greynolds - Great point. I used to do a five tire rotation on my Jeep Wrangler but never worried about damage to the spare.

Can anyone confirm from personal experience the spare gets damaged in regular use from being stored under the vehicle?

@greynolds do you happen to know the P/N for the matching center cap? My wheel from Boch is arriving today and I didn't even think about another center cap.

I wouldn't bother with a center cap for your spare - even mounted on a rear swing out. The center hole is a convenient place to grab the wheel when moving/hoisting it and as far as I can tell, the center caps are not prone to falling out or otherwise requiring a spare.

The bronze wheel is P/N PT960-60200-05 (I'm just including this for completeness as you obviously know the part number if you ordered one)
The matching bronze center cap is P/N PT280-60200-05

Did you need to provide Boch with any info other than a matching Heritage Edition VIN to order the wheel?

I'm still debating what to do regarding the spare :). I've also been debating sticking with the stock tires for a while or swapping BFG KO2's or something similar (like the AT3's). Realistically, I'm not going anywhere exciting any time soon and only have just over 2000 miles on the LC since I bought it in June, so it may make sense to just wait a while and get some use out of the stock tires,
