Yes. I had my TPMS show an error when i installed the new wheel on the spare and placed back in the original spare storage position (under the back of the vehicle).

I had to order the TPMS sensor from Toyota and had it installed on the spare Heritage wheel at my local dealership.

Now the TPMS error is gone.

It looked something like this: as soon as i would hit either highway speeds or in the car long enough the TPMS light would blink before it stayed lit. i believe the manual says this indicates a malfunction or error as opposed to an actual Low pressure warning. I could be completely wrong but please read the manual JIC.
So you had no TPMS transmitter (not even the original) in the spare location?

I think that is different than what scanavera is asking about. Could be wrong though.

I had no TPMS sensor on the new Heritage wheel I bought from Toyota to replace the non-heritage spare that it comes with. When i mounted a new tire on the spare to match my upgraded tires (KO2 285/65 R18) on the rest of the 4 wheels i returned it to the storage location.

apparently the wheels come without the sensor so when the heritage spare was placed in its storage location the TPMS did not have a reading in that location. after a few minutes without a reading in that location the TPMS light would blink and then remain lit o the dash.

this was fixed once i purchased the sensor and had the dealer install it on the new spare wheel.

cheers

I’m tracking now.

Some would opt to have the spare tire transmitter moved to the HE wheel which would avoid needing to program the truck for the new sensor, but you are incurring some labor either way.

But yeah, the truck looks for five ID signals. It will allow those signals to have different baseline pressures from which it calculates its “low tire” alarm values, and this is useful when running two different tire constructions, such as LT-metric AT tires (often 40psi minimum) with the original P-metric highway oriented spare (33psi). Pretty smart system.

Thanks bloc, for the explanation. I didn't realize the system could accommodate different pressures when you reset, which is nice for the reasons you already mentioned. I ended up getting my wheels and tires mounted today and did replace the spare with a matching 5th wheel. I am now running 17x8 ET 40 dakarzero wheels and 285/70r17 Falken Wildpeak at3w and will do the 5 tire rotation.

I had Discount Tire check the spare location and while the backside insert of the OEM wheel (the rubber gasket to hold the bracket) doesn't fit the new wheel, the rubber touchpads that touch the front of the wheel and tire is only touching on the tire, not the wheel, so I shouldn't have much rubbing due to the size of the tire and where things sit. We'll see I guess.

I thought it was better to have a full-size spare than one that is close. And if I check the spare, keep it relatively clean, and rotate on a normal schedule, I am hoping for the best. And if not, oh well, the rigs are meant to be used!

I’ve had the same size tire on Rock warrior wheels for a couple years with no contact to the wheel face. I think you are good to go. One day I’ll move to dakarzeros as well, but other things to buy first.

What TPMS transmitters did they use for you? Your old ones? New OEM? Clones?

Good to hear! I just had them take off the old ones from the OEM wheels.

Good move. The ones the tire shops sell aren’t even close to original toyota quality.
